Theatre review
Sequel delights audience at Blyth premiere
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff
There is no better story than truth.
Several years ago, war bride
Norah Harding delighted audiences
at Blyth with her courtship story This
Year, Next Year. Thursday night, the-
atre-goers enjoyed its sequel
Sometime, Never when it premiered
at the Blyth Festival.
In part two, Norah returns home to

thrilled with the response thus far.
"We have a good number of teams
man.
Norah, too, has secrets which are
eventually revealed.
Personally, I am not sure when I
have enjoyed a play so much. The
script is warm and witty, the charac-
ters as vivid as a summer sky. There
is less a sense of watching players on
stage, than there is of being another
person at the party. And an evening
spent in the company of this group is
wonderful.
Bringing the charm to this family
is an excellent cast, giving endearing
portrayals of people you sense they
truly like.. In attempting to describe
their work, one word keeps coming
forth — real. Janet Amos is incom-
parable as Mum, effectively making
the leap to someone considerably
beyond her own years.
Kate Hemblen, Birgitte Solent and
Adrienne Wilson are solid as her
daughters, Ivy, Norah and Sheila,
respectively. They manage to convey
the idea of older, middle and
youngest sibling without being
stereotypical caricatures.
Tim Koetting as their Uncle Harry
and Robin Craig as Aunt Girlie are
wonderful, one gentle and understat-
ed, the other flighty and comic. And
Adrian Churchill as Ivy's would-be
suitor is a gem, a lusty sailor with no
pretense. The chemistry between
him and Hemblen is gasp worthy.
The only weak link may be
Christopher Morris as Ben who
seems a little wooden in his perform-
ance. However, as he had to wait
until partway into the second act to
make an appearance one might for-
give him if the part seems a little
less comfortable fit than for the oth-
ers.
As well, the English accents, are
almost to a person, impeccable.
Directed by Terry Tweed, the play
moves like a' rollercoaster. Act on.!
proceeds constantly with a good
chuckle or two. Then in act two, it
lags just a little as it climbs through
Ben's dramatic story.
But by the end it's downhill at a

love to have many more to support
the Blyth Festival's capital fundrais-
ing endeavour."

And lest you think I have gushed
too much, let me note that for fear of
that I practised a good deal of
restraint in writing this review. I had
more superlatives at the ready,
because there is much to like about
Harding, her story, her family. If
these people do not delight you I
cannot imagine why.
In her playwright notes Harding
explained that she had mixed feel-
ings about writing this play. knew
it would be a painful process, and yet
I felt it had to be done to complete
the story."
I for one am so glad sloe did.
