THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2001. PAGE 15. On behalf of the Walton communi- ty and surrounding area I would like to express our deepest sympathies to Ian Wilbee and family upon the death of Elva Wilbee. Elva had been battling cancer for a number of years and succumbed to that disease Friday, Aug. 24. I don't think that there are many people who didn't know Elva or who By Jo-Ann McDonald The end of summer is drawing near ind the fall activities will soon begin it the Brussels Legion Branch. Cadets will begin again on 7uesday evenings and if you have a 'oung person who has a desire to earn discipline, some military train- ng and survival techniques then call he Branch for more information. Beavers will also begin in leptember on Wednesday evenings o watch for the registration ads in his paper. Friday night's supper of chicken vings and salads was a big hit again. 'his weekend is the last long week- nd so there will be no supper as veryone deserves a break. The next had not at least heard of her. A very gifted pianist, she entertained people in their family band for many years. Some say that there wasn't a song she couldn't play. She was the organist and choir leader at Duff's United for years and also taught piano lessons to the local children. I got to know Elva by my Avon visits to her house. I would listen to her stories of the good old days and I realized that she was a woman who truly knew how to have fun. There were a lot of gOod friends who have shared in that fun throughout the years. I remember going to her 50th anniversary party. It was obvious by all the people there that they were a well-loved couple. A memory for me that I will week, Sept. 7 will be lasagna. The family day picnic for the Branch members and their families had only a small crowd enjoy the games and barbecue. Thanks to those members who took time to organize the after- noon. There will be euchre on Saturday as usual but no singles dance on Sunday. Elimination tickets are going great and if you want in on the early bird draw, be sure to have yours by Sept. 8. The anniversary dinner tickets are on sale at the Branch. Drop in for yours today and let's see you at the Branch. always treasure is last Christmas Eve's church service when once again and for the last time, Elva shared her gift of music in accompa- nying Keith on the piano while he played Star of The East on his saxo- phone. It was beautiful. Even in her illness those fingers held their magic touch and I am sure that I was not the only one with tears in my eyes. I am sure that I am not alone when I say that she has touched my life and I am thankful to have known her. After hearing about so many peo- ple going East such as, Durrells, Shortreeds, McGavins (I know there were more but I can't remember who they are) it is my turn to add my name to the list as I went with a friend to P.E.I. I loved it. It is as lovely as everyone had told me. I loved seeing the red soil and the red sand on the beach. I had an opportunity to go deep sea fishing. I just couldn't wait to get out there on the ocean and catch fish. There were 15 of us and at first riding the waves in the fishing boat wasn't too bad. It wasn't until the boat dropped anchor that the sea sickness hit me. They kept telling me to look out at the horizon. I did and it helped some. The skipper of the boat instructed us on how to fish, etc. and it seemed as soon as the lines were dropped everyone began catching cod and mackerel left and right. I had people on either side of me catching fish and I never got a bite. Even the two young.children caught some. One man felt sorry for me and gave me his pole to use. I think that the fish sensed my sea-sickness through the line and gave me a break cause I don't think I could've tolerat- ed the sight of a fish up close and personal at that time. It was a great trip and now I know why people love to go there. Ludy, Clint, Jamie and Katie Emmrich just got back from a month's stay in Australia. In talking to Judy I heard what so many other people who have been there, say — that the country is breathtakingly beautiful. However, like most vacations, she said it was so nice to be back home. We're glad you feel that way Judy. Welcome home. If you happen to be going past the Walton Venture Inc. in September you will notice a few more cars there than usual. That is because Shannon McGavin will be opening Walton's little school. It will be a school/childcare facility with litera- cy-based programs for 2 and a half to five-year-old children. There will be half days and full-day programs with a hot meal. This is actually an expansion of Shannon's program that she has been running from her home these past few years. The school will open Sept. 10 and already she has had phone calls from parents wanting to register their children. Shannon said that the support from this community has simply been amazing. She has had people offer- ing to do everything and anything to help her get this project up and run- ning. We wish you all the best Shannon. The date, Aug. 25, will be %mem- bered by at least five newlywed cou- ples in the Walton area. When asking people what they were doing for the weekend their reply was, "Going to a wedding." Church services at Duff's United begin next Sunday, Sept. 2. There will also be a WUCC meet- ing Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. It's time to get back in the groove as they say. ding 'Be ts )ple For call $82: 4-Ip 1-8. ;tam tion Will your more 34-4 le iR0- km. 4-lp TCH nt at y fee arker 7682 4- I p DO Barb 3-3b RAP Auto h of tfn Year out uild. city n r !st 1•••••••••". 3400 Clinton r/Owner and.com room, Patio Idows newer panel. home. 1ep.
