Tigers split double header
The Brtissels Squirts participated
in the year-end championship base-
ball tournament held in Varna on
Aug. 25 and 26.
On Friday night the Squirts sound-
ly beat the Goderich Twp. B team
25-4 for the first big tournament win.
The next game was Saturday at
10:30 a.m. against the Howick-
Fordwich team. With great pitching
by John Bentley and Cheryl Cox
they beat this experienced team 14-4.
The players were hitting strongly
and fielding the ball with few
errors.
This advanced them to the A semi-
final where they met up with the
Hullett/Londesboro team. They lost
a bit of momentum in the first few
innings to come up with a loss of 19-
11. It was a gOod effort with great
pitching again by Bentley.
The team showed steady, improve-
ment over the regular I4-game sea-
son and played the well-seasoned
Bull players during all three tourna-
ment games. Coaches Michelle
Blake and Jill Sholdice were
impressed with the team's hard work
and dedication shown over the sea-
son and thought their tournament
games were-awesome.
Team members are Bentley,
Andrew Baker, Alyssa Gowing,
Claire Mastnak, Evan Wilkinson,
Bridget Blake, Ashley Sholdice,
Cox, Pam Cousins, Michelle
Cousins, David Pethick, Wade
Stephenson, Ryan Jutzi, Zach Hoegy
and Meagan Keifer.
The Brussels Tigers earned a split
in double header action Friday night
in Huron County Fastball League
action.
Game one turned out to be a great
pitchers' dual between Goderich
Gardiners lefty Pat Crawford and the
Tigers' Doug Conley.
The visitors opened the scoring in
the top of the first on a two-run
homerun to lead 2-0.
The Tigers' only threat came in the
sixth, but a diving grab and throw by
Goderich shortstop Jason
Duckworth got Ken Higgins on a

bang bang play at first to end the
rally.
Crawford fanned 15 Tigers in the
shutout, while- Conley pitched well
fanning nine Gardiners.
In the nightcap, the Tigers and
Zurich Rangers hooked up in a wild
one as both teams accounted for 25
runs in a 15-10 Tiger victory.
The Rangers hit the board first
with three in the first, answered by
two Tiger runs in the bottom of the
frame.
Both teams traded runs throughout
the game and at the end of five and a
half innings the score was tied at 10.
The home side broke the game open
with five runs in the sixth to secure
the victory.
Terry Nichol, started for the Tigers
and collected the win with Conley
hurling the final frame for his second
save of the season.
At the plate Moe Pipe and Nichol
both cranked homeruns while Mark
Pennington added a key two-run
triple.
That ends the home sea4m for the
Tigers who finish the regular season
on the road in Lieury.
The Tigers appreciate the fans'
support during the year and all spon-
sors and volunteers who helped with
the 30th fastball tournament.
The Tigers will be in action at the
Huron County Fastball League year-
end tournament Sept. 8 and 9 in
Goderich.
