"It's interesting to learn the history
of just before I was born," Craig
said.
Born in 1948, she is recreating the
world in which her parents lived.
Although Sometime, Never is set in
England, and Craig's parent's lived
in Vancouver, the stresses of a war
bride are familiar.
Stresses like long absences, rations
Business Directory
and lifestyle conditions were some-
thing all war-brides had to
deal with. In the war Craig's father
worked in the navy as an oeeanogra-
pher while her mother stayed at
home, leaving the two with long sep-
arations.
In Sometime, Never Craig plays
Aunt Girlie, the comic relief in the
show.
"She's larger than life," Craig said
in an interview at the Blyth Inn.
Aunt Girlie is a woman who
always knows other people's busi-
ness and isn't afraid to speak her
mind. She's the type of
woman who. isn't always aware of
others' feelings but never intends to
hurt anyone.
"She's brash, in an amusing way,"
Craig explained.
The gentle and poised Craig said
Aunt Girlie is thd type of character
that audiences can't help but like.
The show is based on playwrikht
Norah Harding's experience during
the war years and ail the characters
were once alive.
In the ' world premiere of
Sometime, Never Craig is hoping
that her portrayal of Aunt Girlie is
accurate.
"I hope I do her justice," Craig
said.
Having the 78-year-old Harding
around for rehearsals has been a
great help in developing the charac-
ters and working through the play,
Craig said. Harding gives a real
insight into the play as it is autobio-
graphical.
Audiences may recognize Craig
from CBC's Wind at My Back where
she played Toppy Bailey. It was a
role in which she received the 1998
Gemini for best actress in a TV
series.
Craig acted in Blyth several years
ago and her husband, David, wrote
Fires in the Night about the Clinton
School on Wheels which premiered
at the Festival.
She's acted mostly in theatre
throughout her 30-year career in
many different areas of Canada. She
just completed a production of Hay
Fever in Gravenhurst where
she acted with the entire Follows
family.
Sometime, Never begips Aug. 21
and runs in repertory until Sept. 9.

Blyth Festival at (519)523-9300.
