WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2001. PAGE 3. FROM BLYTH Rev up for Hummer Day Rev up the lawn mowers this Saturday. July 21 for Hummer Day in Blyth. The Communities in Bloom judges will be coming to Blyth next week and everything should look tip-top, .spokesperson Bev Elliott said. The judges will arrive July 24, eval- uate the area on July 25 and depart July 26. The Blyth Communities in Bloom committee has made several improve- ments from recommendations the judges made last year. "Hopefully this. time we have a good chance of winning the nation- als," Elliott said. One of the biggest concerns last year's judges had, was the lack of a tree planting program, Elliott said This year the town has implement- ed a tree program, with every tree in the village mapped out. The map idenitifies trees that need to be cut down, trimmed or areas where trees can be planted. One area that has been recognized for more tree planting is along the Blyth Greenway. The committee has decided to set up a Memorial Celebration Forest. In the forest peo- ple can buy a tree to plant in the memory of a loved one who has died or as a momento to celebrate a special occasion like a marriage, anniversary or birth, Elliott said. Planting won't begin until next year, Elliott estimates. This year the committee has added more flowers along the streets, in painted flower pots from the public school. "We can be very proud of our vil- lage," Elliott said. This year's judges are Mike Manning, from Newfoundland and Rejean D. Millette from Quebec. If residents spot the judges give them a big wave and welcome them to the village, Elliott said. Interested in your community?
