THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2001. By JoAnn McDonald It was another busy weekend at the Brussels Legion Branch on Friday night. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs with delicious salads were enjoyed. This week is meat loaf with scalloped potatoes and baked beans. Suppers are from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you happen to drop in on Friday night say Happy Birthday' to our "old" bartender Sandra, who's cele- brating 40 glorious years. Breakfast on Sunday morning was so good that they ran out of every- thing. Over 100 people dropped in for a bite and a visit at the Branch. Comrade Alf Sutton is still in hos- pital and our thoughts for better health go to him. Plans for our 70th anniversary in October nave been firmed up so keep Oct. 20 open. A banquet will be held and we hope all members of the Branch will be able to attend. The Branch elimination tickets are out and about with members and in some local businesses. The draw will be held Sept. 22 and there will be local entertainers and Mike Kalbfleisch's One Man Band. Don't forget this weekend is our fish fry at the Branch on Saturday from 5 - 7 p.m. Vandals slash trampoline . On July 8 at 10 a.m. a citizen from Ethel reported damage done in her backyard. The 2001 Canadian National Exhibition will host the Ambassador of the Fairs Competition to find Ontario's best young person to rep- resent the agricultural industry and the CNE at various agriculture func- tions in the province. Contestants representing 83 agricultural fairs across Ontario will compete for the Ambassador of the Fair title in a three-day event. Representing Brussels is Patricia Wilbee. All contestants will be judged by a panel on their knowl- edge of current events, the CNE and agriculture, agricultural concerns, poise and personality. The judges will select seven semi-finalists to advance to the next stage of the competition. Each semi-finalist will give a 1.5- minute speech on agriculture, agri- cultural societies or an aspect of their own fair or exhibition. These • speeches will be judged and includ- ed with their previous scores. From the semi-finalists, three finalists will be selected and will be expected to answer an impromptu question. The mark they receive on the question will be tabulated with previous scores to determine the winner. The title of Ambassador of the Fair is a prestigious distinction within the agriculture industry, and the winner is acknowledged as the official ambassador of the Canadian National Exhibition. The winner of the competition will participate in various activities at the 2001 CNE as well as perform significant duties at other fairs, such as,judging, open- ing ceremony functions, guest appearances, presentations and speaking appearances. The gazebo has been the target for vandals; it was last damaged April 23. According to the Deb Seili, co-chair of the Brussels business group, the damage is estimated at $300. "We can't afford to give toys to irresponsible individ- uals," she said adding that it wouldn't be repaired, just cleaned up.
