9 more charges
laid in arson case
Huron OPP, as a result of further
investigation, have laid nine more
charges over the fires that took place
in the Town of Seaforth over the
course of several months.
Three Huron OPP crime detec-
tives, who have put in extensive
hours on these fires, June 28 laid
nine charges of arson against
Thomas Jeffrey Berry, 19, of
Seaforth.
The investigation began in
December after a vehicle fire on
High Street. The car was destroyed.
Next a fire took place in a dump-
ster behind Donna G's Restaurant on
Goderich Street on Feb. 11 when the
contents of the dumpster were set on
fire. Some damage was done to the
dumpster but the fire was contained.
The third fire took place on April
15 at a metal storage shed behind the
business of Bluewater Interiors and
was extinguished by the Seaforth
Fire Department. That same day
another recycling bin behind the
Knechtel's Store was set on fire with
no damage being done.
The fifth fire was April 30 at the
Sill Hardware Store on main street.
In this case the side of the building
was set on fire and with quick help
from a citizen the fire was put out by
the local volunteer firefighters.
Another fire occurred that same day
when the owner arrived at work to
find, structural damage done to the
building called Ice Dreams again
located on the main street.
The seventh fire took place on
May 12 when an elevator building
and dumpster owned by London
Agricultural Commodities were set
on fire on Crombie Street.
On May 28 a storage trailer, shed
and dumpster were destroyed behind
Quality Jersey Products on High
Street. This fire spread to a garage
owned by a resident on High Street.
A total of over $200,000 worth of
structural damage 'occurred with
another $200,000 estimated in prop-
erty or equipment that were lost in
the blaze.
Berry was later caught in the
process of burning the Victoria Park
Band Shelter by a combined force of
OPP officers sent into the area to
help put a stop to the fires being set.
He was charged with two offences at
that time, one of arson and the other
of having possession of incendiary
devices. He has been in custody
since that date and will be attending
court in Goderich on Aug. 13 on all
charges. Presently he is having a
30-day assessment done in St.
Thomas.
The OPP would like to thank the
community for all their help
throughout the investigation. Many
business owners, citizens of the
Town of Seaforth and the volunteers
of the Seaforth Fire Department are
to be commended for the assistance
given to the OPP.

Huron OPP were called this past
weekend to Family Paradise
Campgrounds on the Hullett-
McKillop Line in McKillop Twp.
over a water mishap.
A boy was walking with his moth-
er and other family relatives along a
man-made lake. The youth, age three
was walking on a floating dock when
he slipped into the water. A male on
the dock came to the mother's aid
and pulled the child from the water.
He was not breathing and two ladies
ran over and started giving CPR. The
child started breathing again, cough-
ing up an amount of water.
The Huron ambulance system
along with paramedics arrived at the
scene and transported the child to
Seaforth Public Hospital where he
was examined, treated and later
released.
The Huron OPP would like to
commend the citizens at the camp-
ground who came running and saved
his life.
