Stratford Summer Music has sounds for every ear
Stratford Summer Music is a rare
treat for music lovers of all kinds. In
its inaugural season, Stratford
Summer Music presents a variety of
performances, masterclasses and
events of interest to all people of all
ages.
R. Murray Schafer will be
composer-in-residence. He will
conduct music workshops for young
people, give a lecture in the Harry
Somers lecture series, work with
children and be the host of a
"listening walkabout" in downtown
Stratford.
On Wednesday, July 25, Stratford
will celebrate the opening of the
Stratford Summer Music with the
Vancouver Chamber Choir singing
from a barge as it drifts along Lake.
Victoria. At 9:20 p.m., fireworks
will light up the sky.
John Scott, royal organist from St.
Paul's Cathedral, London Eng., will
play four different concerts, July 26,
July 27, July 28 and July 29 at Knox
Presbyterian Church. As well, Scott
will hold four masterclasses for eight
talented musicians from
Southwestern Ontario. The
masterclasses are free to the public.

Alcorn, Canada's 1999 Jazz Artist of
the Year, at 11:30 p.m. in The Church
Restaurant: His trio will perform the
music of Cole Porter with Arlene

Tova, George Gershwin with Molly
Johnson, Harold Arlen with Barbara
Fulton, Jerome Kern with Melissa
Stylianou and old favourites with
Jackie Richardson.

activities and progrirs are free.
Two workshops will e presented by
Schafer, One, a vocal workshop and
the other, an ins rumental workshop.
As well Tonri son Highway has
written a new play'' for Stratford
Summer Music called The Incredible
Adventures of Mary-Jane Mosquito.
This world premiere with music
written, composed and played by
Thomson) Highway, features
chanteuse Patricip Cano.
The Vancouver Chamber Choir
will participate in the opening
celebration and present four a
cappella concerts at Knox
Presbyterian Church. Each concert is
a unique program ranging from
chant to folksong, traditional to
avant garde. The choir has released
on Jan. 31. The Susie Arioli Swing
Band will feature music from the
1930s and 1940s. The Songwriter's
Circle, on June 6, will once again
feature a gathering of musicians who
will share their music and words
with the audience and one another.
With the support of the Canadian
Council, four plays will be
performed in the Great Canadian
Plays series. Sibs, written by Diane
Flacks and Richard Greenblatt, will
be performed on Nov. 6 and Ivanka
Chews the Fat! by Jo-Ann
Waytowich will play on Jan. 15.
Blood on the Moon, a play written
and performed by Pierre Brault on
April 23 invites you to sit in on the
notorious trial of James Patrick
Wheland, who is accused of the
murder of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, a
Father of the Confederation.
Wingfield's Folly, starring Rod
Beattie, the continuing story of Walt
Wingfield's life on the farm, is on
May 28.
Merrill Lynch Electric Thursdays,
has expanded to four concerts
featuring the Jeans 'n Classics Band
and the Kitchener-Waterloo
26 recordings and CDs,- and
commissioned more than 100 new
works.
Quartetto Gelato is a group of four
musicians who enjoy performing an
eclectic selection of music ranging
from opera to classical favourites to
tangos and gypsy fiddling. The
quartet will play four times including
the world premiere of Dance of
Light, an interactive multimedia
experience that draws on images of
life and longing.
Stratford Summer Music honours
Canada's Maureen Forrester with
recitals by two promising young
Canadians. Marie-Nicole Lemieux,
contralto, was winner of the Queen
'Elizabeth International Vocal
Competition in Brussels, Belgium in
May, 2000.
The second performer is Jasper
Wood, twice honoured at the 1999
Lipizer International Violin
Competition in Gorizia, Italy.
Jonah, a Biblical dramatic pageant
created by Murray Schafer and
Friends, is a special late-night
pageant that will be staged in the
grandeur of Knox Presbyterian
Church. The 50 performers coming
from Sackville, New Brunswick, are
all members of Sackville United
Symphony. The concerts for
2001/2002 are: Madmen Across the
Water on Nov. 8; All the Young
Dudes on Jan. 17; Wonderland — an
Evening with Alan Frew on March
21 and Electric Thursdays' Fever — A
Disco Ball on May 16.
The Encore series is comprised of
three performances from popular
favourites'at The Centre. On Oct. 11,
Dein Perry's Tap Dogs will be back.
The Nylons will perform on Jan. 25.
The Afternoon Series is comprised
of The Voices of Showtime
presentation of Moments to
Remember on Feb. 12; Annie Get
Your Gun on March 26; Ragtime on
May 14 and An Old Fashioned Sing-
Along on June 4.
The Family Fun Series features
three shows for families to enjoy.
Sharon, Brant and Friends with
well-loved favourites to sing-along is
on Dec. 1. A Promise Is A Promise,
by Robert Munsch, and Michael
Kusugak on March 30. On June 8,
Bananas in Pyjamas with host Cindy
Cook and the fun-loving B1 and B2,
will perform a fun-filled programme
of jokes, skits and songs.
Church. This is a modern spectacle
in the tradition of a medieval
_morality play.
The Harry Someer Lecture Series
focuses on significant issues for the
arts in the 21st century. There will be
two lectures. Music, The Soundscape
and Acoustic Ecology, will be given
by Schafer with Somer's music
performed by the Vancouver
Chamber Choir providing an
introduction. The second
presentation will be given by Prof.
Timothy Collings, inventor of the V,
Chip. The topic is The Arts Amidst a
Technological Revolution. Before
Professor Collings speaks, Andrew
Dawes, founding first violinist with
the Orford Sting Quartet, will play
music by Harry Somers. These
lectures are free.
On Sunday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m.,
the National Youth Orchestra will
present an outdoor concert on the
flats in front of the Stratford Festival
Theatre. One hundred young people
from all 13 Canadian provinces and
territories will perform works by
Suppe, Pauk, Ravel, Dvorak,
Tchaikovsky and Elgar.
Four concerts will be held on Aug.
2, 3, 4 and 5 at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall
Auditorium: Alice Der Kervorkian,
piano; Terry McKenna with Kevin
Ramessar, music for lute, guitar and
mandolin; The Aeolian Winds;
Sharlene Wallace, Celtic harpist.

The Centre in the Square is
offering nine series for 2001/2001.
The seven series from last season —
Broadway, Comedy, Fantasy, On
Stage, Great Canadian Plays, Merrill
Lynch Electric Thursdays and
Encore will return with the addition
of two new series, an Afternoon
Series and a Family Fun Series.
The Broadway series will feature
two award-winning musicals, Annie
Get Your Gun, with score by Irving
Berlin March 26 and Ragtime, the
four-time Tony Award-winning
musical based on E.L. Doctorow's
best-selling novel, May 13.
The Comedy series features The
Flaming Idiots, Feb. 9, Bob Newhart,
March 7 and Surprise! Another Night
of Liughs on June 1.
Children of all ages will enjoy the
performances in the Fantasy series.
Big River - the Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn, adapted from the
novel by Mark Twain and with music
and lyrics by Roger Miller is on Feb.
20. Carousel Players will present The
Hobbit on April 17, based on the
book by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The On Stage series is a unique
experience where the audience will
share the stage with the performer.
