Hullett Central Public School
Hullett valedictorian talks about time
• By Brett Bean
There is a time to laugh, a time to
cry, a time to say hello, and a time to
wave goodbye.
Fellow students, teachers, parents,
families and guests. Tonight, as we
graduate from Hullett Central Public
School in Londesboro, we have com-
pleted our years of primary educa-
tion, and it is time to step forward to
the next level of study at high school.
When we entered kindergarten,
nine years ago, we could barely tell
time. However, Mrs. Kemp kept us
on schedule, and we soon knew the
most important times throughout the
day - naptime, recess-time, play-
time. snack-time, lunchtime and
finally, time to go home. I think these
are still the most important times in
our day.
By Grade I, we began experiment-
ing with time, as Mrs. Bosman
taught us to create clocks from paper
plates. We received our basic foun-
dation of learning and time flew by
as we had fun with reading, writing,
and arithmetic.
In Grade 2, Mrs. Radford helped
us learn more about addition and
subtraction, by allowing us to play
card games and chess, but we still
found time to complete our other
schoolwork.
Mr. Sanders captured many mem-
ories of our daily and special activi-
ties in Grade 3, by taking pictures.
The school still has scrapbooks with
these photos in them, and they will
be a momento for generations.
Mr. Livermore had a great time
teaching us math facts, spelling drills
and encouraged us to participate on
all the sports' teams. He always
made time to discuss the games and
scores of his favourite teams.
But, as Mary Lou Retton once
said, "We learn that a trophy
carries dust, but memories last forev-
er."
We all experienced a very sad time
in Grade 4, when we lost our good
friend, Luke Anderson. I wish I
could turn back the hands of time
and change what happened.
However, we have our memories of
Luke, and his philosophy in life -
Hakuna Matata - which means no
worries for the rest of your days.
A lot of our time in Grade 5 was
spent doing projects and homework,
since Mr. Gingerich's motto was
study, study, study.
In Grade 6, Mrs. Stennett and Mrs.
Pickell split their time to teach our
class.
During these school years, we had
time -to. develop many friendships.
William Shakespeare spoke these
words a long time ago, "A friend is
someone who knows who you are,
understands where you've been,
accepts what you've become, and
still gently invites you to grow."
It was a time of growth and devel-
opment in Grade 7, as we learned to
adapt to change and adjustment as
we had three different teachers in
one year: Mr. Rapson, Mrs. Rowatt
and Mrs. Gilroy.
Finally, in Grade 8, Miss Uhler has
taken the time to prepare us for high
school. She
has expected
us to be role
models for
the younger
students and
to strive to
meet our
goals.
We should
continue to
shoot for the
m oon,
because even
if we miss
we'll end up in the stars. Our destiny
is a matter of choice, not chance.
We have made many choices in the
past nine years. Sometimes we made
a stupid choice, however, under the
guidance of our parents, and princi-
pals, Mr. Jewitt, Mr. Barker and Mrs.
Tebbutt, we are better prepared to
accept the responsibilities of our
actions and the consequences.
We have many opportunities ahead
of us, and we could achieve great
things.
Miss Wyatt, our music teacher, has
developed our musical talents, and
has given us the freedom to express
ourselves through song and instru-
ments.
Madame Rea has taught us to com-
municate in the language of French.
Perhaps, in time, our travels will lead
us to foreign countries. Quoting from
Rogers and Hammerstein, "We can
climb every mountain, search every
stream, follow every rainbow 'til you
find your dream."
It is Time. _
