It was another successful fundraiser for the students of F.E.
Madill Secondary School in Wingham when their Friday
evening coffee house raised more than $600 for cancer
research. Mark Chippa of Wingham accompanied Blyth's
Shawn Henry for his vocal performance. Other local teens
performing at the show were Jackie Falconer of Blyth. and
Amber Park and Joshua Gropp of Brussels.

four characters so that I have arrived
at the play I intended."
He describes the play as a "whim-
sical mystery".
"It's basically my nightmarish idea
of what would happen if my career or
anyone's life came to a shuddering
halt."
The story tells of a man who lost
his love 50 years earlier and of the
old hag who stops him from succeed-
ing in discovering what happened so
he is left to "linger his life away",
Pinsent explains.
Pinsent agrees that the "creature"
might be more synonymous with
Newfoundland. "But really there is a
hag in all of us stopping us from real-
izing our dreams."
When Artistic Director Anne
Chislett approached him about pro-
ducing his play, which he says with a
degree of humility, "I've been
assured is fun, magical", Pinsent
"jumped at the chance."
He was first introduced to Blyth
two decades ago when it was one of
three stage outings for his highly suc-
cessful John and the Missus . "It was
very well-received and there is
something about the makeup of the
theatre in Blyth that lets audiences
stand back and appreciate new
works."
Though casting as of press date
had not been firmly set, those
involved are excited about the ones
with whom they've been speaking.
"There are some good choices," says
Pinsent.
One of those choices will not be
Pinsent, an accomplished actor in his
own right. "I have written two plays
Easy Down Easy and Brass Rubbings
in which I have appeared. My honest
feeling is that you don't get a good
look at the play or a sense of why
people are coming to see it. It's
something I never know if I'm too
close, which is what happens when
acting."
Directing is another story. "I have
directed a stage musical of
Rowdrinan. That's different because
you're part of the architecture (of the
play)."
With Blyth's Comer Green Pinsent
is more than happy, however, to have
Diana Belshaw directing the design
of this production. "It's always
intriguing to have someone look over
your shoulder and bring their powers
to a show to make it their own. Diana
seems to be one of those people able
to do that."
While the Festival prepares to
mount Pinsent's play, the playwright
becomes actor, completing work on

Proulx. Pinsent says he was fortunate
to get one of the main parts in a
movie that boasts "a great cast",
which includes Judy Densch and
Kevin Spacey, and wonderful direc-
tor, Lasse Halstrom (Chocolat,
What's Fasting Gilbert Grape). "He
is just the best at creating an atmos-
phere."
Work resumed on News in
Newfoundland in May. Come the end
of June, however, Pinsent will be in
Blyth for the theatre opening, where
he will be the keynote speaker, and
for rehearsals of Corner Green.
"I think this will be a terrific asso-
ciation. It's the first time in a long
time I have felt this good about
where a project is going. I am com-
fortable letting it go. It's the first time
in a long, long while I feel safe let-
ting (my play) out of the house."

has been heard on radio, in animated
features and audio books.
With an impressive body of work,
from acting, to directing, to writing,
the diversely talented Gordon
Pinsent has earned acclaim from
coast to coast and on both sides of the
border. This summer, Blyth audi-
ences will have the opportunity to
enjoy his talent as a playwright with
the mainland premiere of his
revamped Corner Green.
The play has had two previous pro-
ductions. Pinsent says he wrote it ini-
tially for a small group in his home-
town of Grand Falls, Newfoundland
with I I people in mind. The second
was a professional production in St.
John's.
