Wouldn't it be great to be. able to
fly over to Italy and see the sights?
Well that's what 18-year-old
Dennis Rijkhoff and 42 fellow stu-
dents from St. Annes in Clinton, plus
six adults and three teachers did.
This had been planned a year ago
and the students raised money for the
trip by having car washes and other
fundraising events.
Leaving on March 7 the group
landed in Frankfurt, Germany where
they got on another plane and landed
in Rome. They spent a few days
there visiting the various' tourist
places such as the Colosseum, the
Vatican (they didn't see the Pope)
and the Trevi Foundation. The belief
is that if you throw in one coin there
you will return to Rome again. If you
throw two coins in you will marry in
Rome. For those who throw in three
coins you will live in Rome.
It looks like marriage in Rode for
Dennis.
The group also went to Mount
Pompeii. That was the city that had
been completely covered in lava and
ash in 78AD when Mount Vesuvius
erupted, burying and killing some
2,000 people. It wasn't until 1748
that excavation began. But it wasn't
done well and in 1861 a methodical
and careful excavation started.
Dennis said that one house they
visited, which had been rebuilt, had
some original furniture and wall
hangings. In some of the gardens
there were fountains that had been
preserved.
From there they took a bus to

Brindisi where they took the ferry to
Greece. It is very mountainous and
Dennis loved the countryside.
They took a bus to Olympia where
the tour guide showed them the
Olympic stadium and some ruins and
temples. From there they went and
saw the largest outdoor theatre of its
kind in the world. The tour guide
went down and stood in the middle
of the theatre and ripped a piece of
paper and those at .the top could
actually hear the sound of the tear-
ing. It was designed to have perfect
acoustics.
It was a beautiful piece of architec-
ture, built from white marble.
They went to a disco night club
where they all had a great time. They
then spent three days in Athens
where they saw the Acropolis. Here
they saw a group of temples dedicat-
ed to Athena-and other gods. They
visited ruins around the city and saw
the first modern Olympic stadium all
made out of marble shaped in an
elongated horse shoe. It was built in
1896 and it holds 70,000 people.
During free time, Dennis and his
bunch spent time at a huge city mar-
ket with hundreds of stores where he
was able to experience the culture.
Their last day was at the site of the
Oracle ruins. This is where people
would come and see what the Oracle
saw in their future. This was a beau-
tiful town that was built in the side of
a mountain, with stairs going down
to the next set of streets.
Their last night was spent going to
a Greek restaurant where they had
traditional Greek food, plus live
Greek entertainment with dancers
and musicians. All in all Dennis had
a fabulous time and knows that he
now wants to do a lot more travelling
in the future.
I wonder if he'll go back to Rome
and throw in that third coin.

Mitchells greet at Duff's United Church
The -next WUCC meeting will be
April 4 at 8 p.m. Murray and Olene
Dennis will be there to show their
slides of Turkey. Everyone is wel-
come to come.
Bring scissors too to cut soup
labels. It was decided at the last
meeting that it was too big of a job
for one person to do so many hands
will make light work.
Phyllis and Emerson Mitchell
were greeters at Duff's United
Church on-March 25. Guest speaker
was Stephen Hildebrand from
Seaforth.
He began the service by telling the
story of the cracked pot. Following
that he got everyone in the 'mood for
singing by having the congregation
sing If You're Happy and You Know
It.
He- announced that Neil Lackey,
the pastoral care minister for Huror -
Perth Presbytery will be the guest
speaker for April I.
The next book study will be
Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Gloria
Wilbee's house.
After the opening hymn the young
worshippers were called forvirtkrd
where they pretended they were
going on a trip with Mr. Hildebrand
at the wheel. He took them around
the church and they saw• mountains,
and giraffes and then they discov-
ered that they were lost.
Luckily Brian McGavin was in the
church and his son Brandon went to
him for something that would save
the day ... a map!
Stephen asked what they were to
do with the map? Read it of course.
So they found their way home.
Stephen asked what they were to do
if they were lost in their daily
lives. He held up the Bible ... read
it.
Monique Baan was the scripture
leader for the service. The sermon
was about the prodigal son.
