At the Branch
Many dine
Friday
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Two weeks have passed since the
last edition of At The Branch and lots
has happened.
The Friday night supper on March
9 had a great turnout for roast beef.
Always a tasty treat.
The usual venue of events for the
week followed with Cadets and
Beavers and darts. Men's euchre had
a dismal attendance but there will be
one tonight, March 21. Could be the
last one seeing spring is around the
corner.
Our euchre team travelled to Galt
to participate at District level and
they enjoyed their day and bus ride
but will not advance any further.
The District darts held in Owen
Sound revealed many of our branch
members advancing to Provincial
level to be held in Toronto in April
Andy Adams. Eric Ross, Steve
Cockram and Bob Richardson with
alternate Wade Henderson are partic-
ipating in singles, doubles and team
competitions in their respective ven-
ues. Congratulations to them.
Friday night supper was spareribs
and again a good crowd. It is $5 for
one plate of food and everyone is
welcome. This week is lasagna.
The weekend was very busy with
Ladies Bluewater darts being held
Saturday afternoon. Also downstairs
was euchre. The high winners of the-
day were Mabel Willis and Helen
Dobson with 75 points. The second
place winners were Alfred and Mabel
with 74 points and coming in third
was Eileen Miller and Irlma Edgar
with 71 points. The lone hand win-
ners 'were Stuart Chamney for men
and Maxine for ladies.
Euchre is every two weeks.
A great crowd enjoyed breakfast
on Sunday morning and Sunday
evening The Blue Diamond Trio
entertained the dancers.
Don't forget the fish fry on
Saturday and the awards and honours
presentations. Initiation is also being
done so if you haven't been initiated
you need to be, to be a member in
good standing. It only takes 10 min-
utes and we would appreciate you
contacting the branch and your atten-
dance on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
We have plans for a ladies stag
night to be in April and hope we have
a full house for our hypnotist to daz-
zle. Look for more information and
tickets soon.
A bus trip to Casino Rama for May
5 is planned and your name and pay-
ment in advance is required. Drop
into the Branch for more info. The
Branch is open from Monday to
Thursday 4 to 8 p.m., Friday 4 to
midnight and Saturday 3 p.m. to 8
p.m. or call 887-6562.
Lee from Huronlea
By Lee Chesterfield
On St. Patrick's Day Huronlea was
fortunate enough to host the annual
Palliative Care luncheon. It was a
huge success; visitors came from
near and far and many at the home
saw old friends from long ago. All in
all it was a day to remember.
There was a large selection of soup
and sandwiches. Cake and-tea or cof-
fee completed the menu. Lorne
MacKenzie played and sang Irish
tunes throughout.
The day before St. Patrick's Day
Whoopee! We have a new baby on
the hill. Mr. Barbour Jr. has arrived
and we're just pretty excited about it.
I think Carolyn Exel and Brooklyn
Wheeler were the last Tory Hill
babies and that's not yesterday.
Congratulations Marc and Trish.
Spring is unofficially, officially
here. You can tell by the number of
skunks and raccoons on the road,
both living and dead. So keep alert to
the little vermins as they check out
the world with less snow. It's not as
costly as hitting a deer but it sure
wrecks a drive.
Saturday night showed a full dance
floor as The Royalaires did their
stuff at the community centre.
Nostalgia in full bloom! The older
set had the dance floor busy all night.
Bob Richmond knew all the words
and even that didn't keep Rene or
anyone else from dancing to the
our cook John George prepared an
Irish lunch — lamb stew, green salad
and a leprechaun cake. Thaact that
John is Greek was overlooked.
Last month, during one of the
countless snow storms, I suggested
that we might be counting daffodils
in March. Well, this is March and if
you've- seen a daffodil please write
and tell me. They will arrive and
after a long hard winter they will be
appreciated all the more. The first
day of spring is approaching so keep
the faith.
smooth music of the six musicians.
Thanks to the Catering Group for
sponsoring the evening. The hockey
and figure skating folks will be the
winners of the profits.
The artistic abilities of some of the
village kids were shown this week as
they did their take of the prodigal son
story in puppet form. Yes, a female
in a pink dress! New minds, new
eyes to a very old story. Party clothes
on the other dudes and the personal-
ities of the animals, just showed me
that Blyth Theatre has lots of upcom-
ing artistic directors from Brussels
ready in about 20 years. Now that's
the church at work.
Hope you had a good week and
kicked up your Irish heels.
HE looks at
cost savings
Huron East councillors reviewed
the cost savings realized through the
winter closure of 22 roads in the
municipality.
By providing no winter mainte-
nance on 10 roads in Grey and
McKillop wards and two in
Tuckersmith, Huron East has saved
$33,352, according to Ministry of
Transportation figures.
Any roads without principal resi-
dences are not plowed and some are
plowed just to a driveway.
All roads left unplowed are
sideroads and have- areas requiring
reconstruction. According to the
report, all the roads are exceptionally
hard to maintain in the winter. All
but one run north and south and are
strongly affected by winds.
