Three years ago, Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich built a three-room school in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. There are two shifts a day of students attending with a total of 240 students. The school is built in the Bario which is a very poor part of the city. There is a barbed-wire fence which separates the school from the dump in the back yard. Each child is required to wear a uniform which costs about $60 American. Most of the money for the uniforms is donated from the Goderich church. In order for one child in a family to be able to attend school, the fam- ily may have to go without food for a while. It is quite common to have up to 25 people living as one family in a one-room house. Many of the children only go to school until they're about 10 years old then they are expected to make money to help in the family's sur- vival. On Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, the students at Blyth Public School are donating items to the hockey bag located in the office. Oh what a change a week can make concerning the weather. On Friday, Feb. 2, we experienced colder temperatures again along with lots of snow. Fortunately though with Wiarton Willie not seeing his shadow it was predicted that an early spring could be setting in within the next few weeks. Well, I will be the first to admit I would never have believed it. Exactly one week later a warm front had moved in giving us abnormally high temperatures. Today marks another special day in February — Saint Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day derives from the Roman feast of Lupercalia (Feb. 15) for which young Roman men and maidens drew partners by a lottery for the upcoming year. The festival gradually became associated with the feast day, Feb. 14 of two Roman martyrs, both named Saint Valentine who lived in the third century. Saint Valentine has traditionally been regarded as the patron saint of lovers. This specific day is also associated with the legend that birds choose their mates on this date. Happy Valentine's Day!
