Happy Valentine's Day to you. I
hope the flowers, jewels, cards or
candy found their way to your home.
Valentine's Day is certainly a well-
advertised season now.
It's always been a national holiday
in my books and so it's good to see
the world catch up. Happy Birthday
Jack, Ken and Cliff. (Editor's Note:
And a Happy Birthday to Betty, too)
The arena was buzzing again on
the weekend as the little guys tried
their luck getting goals on that long
span of ice.
Hockey sure keeps a family from
winter depression as it involves all
members to get the show on the
road.
Another weekend tournament is
passed so we must be well into

FROM BRUSSELS
Streets,
walks
to get
upgrades
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
Brussels residents will see some
much needed upgrades to village
streets and sidewalks this spring.
Brussels Councillor Joe Seili took
the opportunity at the Huron East
council session last Tuesday to quiz
Huron County engineer Sandra
Lawson about the state of roadways
in the community.
Lawson said plans are in the
works to mill and pave Brussels
Line (County Rd. 12) through
Brussels as- well as Newry Road,
(County Rd. 16) to the village limits.
Sidewalk and curb work will also
be completed to repair or replace
several damaged areas.
The curb at the corner of Brussels
Line and Newry Road is just one
location which will see improve-
ment.
It is also expected some sidewalk
repairs will be completed at the
same time.
Lawson said milling and paving
on Newry Road will be continued
into the Grey ward next year.

Snow, rain, sleet, freezing rain,
school closings, closed roads. flood-
ed basements. What are we talking
about? Late January, early February
2001.
Everyone has the winter blahs. We
need somebody to brighten our day
and find those lost smiles.
Well, say no more! Here at
Huronlea we have many of those
people whom I would call the unsung
volunteers. There are ladies who
come to visit their Dad and bring him
goodies — yum, yum. Tarts and
donuts all sorts of sweets and they
bring enough to pass around at snack
time.
There is the lady who comes in
At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a a quiet weekend at the
Branch but isn't staying that way for
tong. The group was busy the first
part of the week putting together a
newsletter. It should be in the mail-
box shortly.
The blind mixed darts on Thursday
has some new participants and all
have a lot of fun.
Wednesday's stag euchre had only
three tables but a lot of fun. You get
to visit with your neighbours more
often and catch up on the news.
Friday night's supper saw a really
good crowd. This week is Harrison
Chicken Supper is from 5:30 - 7 p.m.
for $5 a plate. You don't need to be a
member.
Saturday meat draws were a lot of
fun as usual with a really good
crowd.
This week is the bus trip to Casino
Rama on Saturday, Feb. 17. The bus
is full and for those who tiave bought
tickets please be ready for an 8:30
a.m. sharp departure from the
Legion. We hope you all remember
your lucky rabbit's foot and have a
good day.
very frequently to feed her husband
but always finds a few moments to
push in chairs, tie on bibs, pay a
compliment and leave someone very
happy.
One of our cooks has her clown
diploma. She and her daughter are
coming to entertain us. If clowns
don't make you smile you really are
down.
There is the lady minister who has
a hymn sing. There are so many
unsung volunteers that we take for
granted until perhaps they can't get
here due to illness or bad weather
and then they are really missed.
These are the people who make
Huronlea truly "Home". So thank
you all — we need you.
Also good luck to our district crib
players who are competing on
Saturday in Seaforth.
Euchre, breakfast and a singles
dance will round out this busy week-
end so let's see you drop in to the
Branch.
Help protect the environment
Reduce, reuse and recycle
February. The old folks went by
nature signs, we go by set and estab-
lished sports events to follow the
passing of winter.
The school crew are at day nine for
weather-related school cancellations
and the young lady I spoke to didn't
seem the least upset about it.
Imagine that.
Mother Nature was showing her
stuff again this week. Highways
were closed with flooding, while
whiteouts made others unsafe. No
wonder Canadians start conversa-
tions with the state of the weather.
Be careful when you're out for
your stroll. Excess water from the
weekend has frozen into interesting
patterns, some very smooth and slip-
pery, other spots rough and hard to
walk on, so walk canny.
Happy Heart Day and give your
honey a kiss.
Bye now. Betty G. W.
