A Young Perspective
Local musician discusses new split CD
By Sarah Mann
You may or may not have heard of
Swampwater. It's a battle of the
bands that .was held at Sacred Heart
high school in Walkerton. I caught
up with Joshua Gropp, singer and
guitarist for the local punk band
Perish which also includes Rob
McKercher and new bass player
Gelan Hopkins, to talk about what's
new and happening with them.
Sarah: So what news do you have?
Joshua: Well, first off, we have a
split CD coming out really soon,
hopefully by April.
Sarah's Side
Exams
By Sarah Mann
I don't know about you but when I
hear the word exam, I shudder. It's
tough to be calm when one test, one
two-hour long test, can drastically
increase or decrease your mark.
Even if you study extremely hard
and know everything you've been
taught, your nerves will most likely
be the thing to bring you down.
What Matters
By Elyse DeBruyn
Recently there has been something
bugging me. It's about when your
friend gets a boyfriend.
My friend would always go out
S: Clarify for the people who don't
know, what is a split CD?
J: It's when two bands contribute
an equal amount of music to the
same CD. Ours will be with Big Fat
Nothing from Carbondale, Illinois
and will be released on Traffic
Finger Records based in Chicago.
S: How did you get this set up? Did
Big Fat Nothing contact you, did you
contact them or did the label?
J: I sent our latest demo CD to
Traffic Finger and Captain Mike (the
label owner) loved it. He wanted to
release it right away. So, he found
When it comes to exam time I
always seem to study my hardest the
night before but this year I took a dif-
ferent approach. Of course, I still
studied the night before but that was-
n't all I did.
Right before I went to bed I took a
nice long walk to clear my mind and
relax. I got a good night's sleep and
woke up the next morning feeling
with me on week nights then one day
she announced that she had a
boyfriend and pretty much stopped
calling to go out and hanging out at
school. When her boyfriend was
another band, 'Hotlips Messiah' but
something fell through with that and
soon enough he found Big Fat
Nothing and they are recording as
we speak.
S: When/what are you recording?
J: We will be releasing most of the
songs off our demo with a couple
more that we recorded with Mark
Htissey at Renaissance Studios about
S: What happens when it's released?
J: It will (hopefully) be out by
April and the first 100 will be sold
for $10 a piece. You can get one of
refreshed and well rested. I ate a
good breakfast (while reading over
my notes) and listened to calming
music. I don't think I had ever felt so
calm before an exam.
There was just one problem with
all of this, however. As soon as I got
to school and heard everyone talking
about how they thought they failed
their exam and saw the frightened,
over no one else mattered.
At school the "lovely couple" can-
not be apart for more than five min-
utes. One day my friend got all upset
because she didn't know where her
boyfriend was. It turned out he was
in the library. She got really mad at
him for not telling her where he
went.
This is really sad and annoying. I
don't understand why friends don't
matter to those people. Their 'signif-
icant other' becomes their life. Hi
guys, you're not married. I •think
they need to step back-and take a
look at how they are acting.
disoriented "exam look" on almost
everyone's face my nerves got the
best of me once again.
So you're left asking, what's the
solution? Try your hardest? Do your
best?
Here's one for you — don't talk to
or look at anyone before your
exam.

S: What lies in the future for Perish?
J: Hopefully some tounng. I hope
- to hit the road this summer for a bit.
I also want to do some 'theme'
release eventually.
S: Theme release?
J: Yeah, like a tribute to a certain
band or a Christmas CD, or some-
thing like that.
