Legion darters advance
Winner
The Brussels Agricultural Society presented awards at its
annual meeting last Thursday night. Brianne Wheeler was
the recipient of the David_and Joan Perrie award this year.
Well we made it — the end of
January and sneaking up to
Groundhog Day with no more major
blizzards. Ah life is good.
It's been pretty quiet on Tory Hill,
partly because the snowbanks keep
most of the noise and people out and
January is a good time to vegetate.
That's just a little short of hibernate,
so reading and dozing are the priori-
ties.
Did you know that there really is a
Tory Hill? I saw it as part of an
address in a magazine. It's in the
Haliburton region. So we're not
alone on, or in, Tory Hill.
There is a relatively new kitten in
the neighbourhood that when given
the chance will enter the bathtub and
lounge on unsubmerged body parts,
so don't believe it that cats are afraid
of water. The Birthday Lady will tell
you different. Call Joan on Thursday
and sing her the Happy, Happy Song.
As you can tell it's a slow news
week as well.
Bye now, Betty.
Good attendance
for Lodge meeting
The regular meeting of Morning
Star Rebekah Lodge was held on
Tuesday, Jan. 23 with a good atten-
dance. Noble Grand Sister Lillian
Moses presided.
The charter of the lodge was
draped in memory of Sister
Marguerite Crawford, an active, ded-
icated member for over 50 years.
She was also a Past District Deputy
President.
Invitations were received from
Exeter for a Poor Boys Luncheon
and an Irish Stew Supper and
Brother's Night in London. There
will be a Good Friday Rally in St.
Thomas and a banquet honouring
Grand Patriarch Mel McCutcheon.
A special meeting will be held on
Monday, Feb. 12 at Stratford con-
cerning the amalgamation of two
Districts. All members are asked to
attend.
The next card party will be on
Monday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for a
ham supper followed by cards at 8
p.m.

FROM BRUSSELS
Lee front Iluronlea
Residents
enjoy
sleigh
ride
By Lee Chesterfield
This is a clear bright January day,
cold and crisp. We at Huronlea think
Of days like this in the long ago of
another century.
Father would call "Everybody
ready? We're going on a sleigh ride."
With squeals of delight we would
grab our mitts and toques (or some-
body else's if we couldn't find our
own).
All snug under warm blankets we
were off — over the hills, through the
woods, bells tinging and the children
singing. Father would sometimes say
"That sounds nice, but this time let's
all sing the same tune". So a lively
rendition of Old MacDonald had a
farm went on and on.
When we got home we sang in
front of a wood fire drinking hot
chocolate and munching ginger
snaps. Those were the days, my
friend, we thought they'd never
end.
Well, perhaps they didn't!
We went on a sleigh ride early in
the week from Huronlea. No, we're
not children any more but we can still
sing, "Sleigh bells ring, are you lis-
tening? Walking in a winter wonder-
land."
Then we arrived at Ken Shortreed's
cabin (which he very kindly lends us
every year. We sat by a warm wood-
stove eating sandwiches and drinking
— what else, hot chocolate.
It was a glorious clay and one we'll
remember.
As we drove home we sang Old
MacDonald had a farm. The more
things change, the more they stay the
same, no matter how many years go
by.

The general meeting of the
Brussels Legion, Branch was held
last Monday and only a small group
was on hand.
A committee was formed to co-
ordinate activities to celebrate the
branch's 70th anniversary in
October. Anyone with ideas or sug-
gestions can call Comrades Glenn
Bridge, Marg Bennett and Eric Ross.
If you would like to help on the com-
mittee, they would 'appreciate the
assistance. Any old photographs or
mementoes concerning the Legion
would also be appreciated.
Keep Oct. 20 open for sure so we
can see you at the Branch celebra-
tions.
Wednesday night was men's stag
euchre and only three tables were at
play. By the noise, I'm sure they
were having fun.
The next one is Feb. 7. ,
Open mixed darts is on Thursday
night. New people are joining in the
fun every week. Cost is $1.
Friday night supper of sausage and
scalloped potatoes, was well attend-
ed. Next week is roast pork.
On Saturday there were 16 euchre
players off to Hensall for Zone com-
petition. There were 12 players Who
had fun and good luck. The four-
some of Gary Dauphin, Mike
Dauphin, Andy. Overholt and Tom
Warner will go on to District compe-
tition.
We are pleased to report that com-
rades Cathy Snyder and Gerald
Rutledge have returned home from
