Calvin Brick joins Knox United FROM BELGRAVE The January meeting of the Evening Unit to Knox United Church, Belgrave was held Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 8 p.m.. at the home of Muriel Coultes with 12 members present. Lorna Cook, leader, welcomed everyone and thanked Muriel for hosting the meeting. She read a suitable poem. Laura Johnston conducted the worship service. She spoke to Mary Magdeline, reading from Luke 8. Many present-day couples experience divorce and need to make choices. Choices contribute to each person's personality, she said. The Huron Presbyterial meeting is to be held Feb. 12 (snow date Feb. 26) in Mitchell United Church. Lunch will be provided. The guest speaker is Rev. Susan Cameron. There is a different timepiece on the west wall. This beautiful old clock has an interesting local history. Inside the clock on a wooden plaque is the following inscription: "In loving memory of Nurse Grace Neda Ferguson who gave her life for the service of others. Presented to Knox Church Congregation, Belgrave by her parents W. H. and Margaret Ferguson Dec. 7, 1918." This was the date that Grace Ferguson died. Grace was born and raised in a log cabin about three church service next Sunday. The UCW welcome the Calvin Brick ladies as they become Unit 3 of the UCW. Grace and her two sisters became missionaries in China, and another sister married and lived in the old log cabin. Grace and the two sisters went out from Morris Twp. in 1889 to China and 1,500 miles up the Yangtse River. Because of a rebellion in China she had to ride below the deck of the boat up the river. These sisters taught in a girls' school in Shanghai. With the war in the city the girls were warned of an attack so they took the students to Richard and Anne Catherine, Sarah and Daniel Anderson of Goderich, Nancy, Matthew and Alicia Ball of Hanover, Doreen and Rob Roy, Christina and Emily of Peterborough, and Sheila and Doug Cousins, Brandon and Jordyn of Guelph spent Christmas Day and part of the holiday week with their parents Ross and Barbara Anderson. They all attended the Anderson family Christmas at the Women's Institute Hall on Boxing Day. Bob and Jane Grasby and Laura Johnston spent a few days over the Christmas holidays with George and Mary Johnston in Ilderton. Marilyn and Chester MacDonald and Harold Johnston all of Goderich and Helen Stonehouse were Christmas dinner guests at the home of Ruth Johnston. the basement of the school, just as a cannon passed through the school wall. Grace returned home from China only once sailing the India Ocean, the Red Sea, the Suez Canal up to London, England and saw the funeral of Queen Victoria. After a short visit home, she returned to China to teach and is buried there. Another sister remained in the log cabin and raised a son who became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario, a son who became a doctor, Chester and Marilyn MacDonald held their Christmas at their home in Goderich with dinner guests Douglas Thompson and friend Val Smith of Toronto and Ruth Johnston of Belgrave. On Boxing Day, Don and Marilyn Craig and son David held Christmas at their home for their family. Those present were Doug and Joyce Craig and family of Atwood, Fred and Debbie Hakkers of .Blyth, Ed and Nancy Daer of Wingham, Terry Daer and friend Julie of Barrie, Patricia Daer of London and Helen Stonehouse of Belgrave. Jim and Irene Lamont were Christmas Day dinner guests at the home of Mike and Donelda Cottrill and family. On Boxing Day, Dale and Colleen Lamont of London and Jim and Irene Lamont were dinner guests at the home of Mike and Donelda Cottrill and family. Mike and Donelda Cottrill and family were also Christmas guests at his mother's in Tiverton. The Lamonts also visited with Irene's mother Winnie Vincent at the Seaforth Manor for a pre-Christmas wine and cheese party. Christmas Day visitors at the home of Les and Donna Shaw were Pam and Richard Gethke, Shawn and a daughter who was a nurse and taught at Parkdale Collegiate. The clock has been ticking away for the past 82 years reminding congregants of a time when Grace Ferguson and her sisters were living in a log cabin only a few of miles from here and then teaching in China halfway around the world. They all attended the Anderson Family Christmas on Boxing Day at the WI Hall. Murray, Michael and Richard Irwin and Heather Dietrich, Kevin and Nicholas Irwin of Kitchener were Christmas dinner guests at the home of Betty Irwin. Banners and balloons greeted the partygoers at the annual New Year's Eve party in the Women's Institute Hall. Bernice and Gordon Gross assisted by Donna and Les Shaw were hosts with many helpers. Euchre was enjoyed with high prizes going to Lois Chamney and Gordon Gross. Low prizes went to Mary Craig and Ed Stewart. Les provided music for dancing. Many interesting prizes were given for spot dances and lucky draws. Midnight brought Auld Lang Syne, the breaking of balloons and Happy New Year wishes. A tasty potluck buffet brought the evening to a close. The 2001 event will be hosted by Gloria and Don Dow, Louise and Gordon Bosman and Wilma and Ross Higgins.
