Tough playing
It was a rough and tumble game when the Elma Logan rivals came into
Brussels last Wednesday night to take on the Brussels/Belgrave Bantam
girls. The penalty-riddled contest resulted in a tie.
Girls teams get physical
It was a physical contest
from the onset when
Brussels/Belgrave Bantam
Women and rival Elma Logan
met in regular season play
Wednesday, Jan. 3 in
Brussels.
The two teams battled back
and forth for possession of the
puck with some very fast-
paced end-to-end action.
Elma Logan was the first to
do damage in the opening
frame. Defensive player
Katelyn O'Rourke skated into
the slot unprotected and fired
a high wrist shot that beat
Berfeltz in the
Brussels/Belgrave net to give
the visitors the early lead.
Starting the New Year off,
the Lightning sauntered on
down to Rochester Jan. 6 for
two games and picked up a
game with Buffalo on the way
back home the next day.
Brittany Kellington opened
the scoring from Krista
Cameron after intense
forechecking while short-
handed early in the first peri-
od in game one. Although
Saugeen controlled the rest of
the first and most of the next
period, a bouncing puck and
mix-up in front of the net
allowed Rochester to tie the
game. Less than a minute
later, Bridget Sheddon spotted
Heather Walker, who put the
girls ahead again with a wrist
shot into the low corner.
A scoreless third gave the
Lightning a 2-1 win.
Saugeen came out flying
and peppered the Rochester
netminder in game two later
in the day, but finally got one
The teams continued their
rugged play which resulted in
many undisciplined penalties
for both sides. T
his finally cost the Elma
Logan team in the second
period when Brussels/Bel-
grave tied things up. With
Elma Logan's Mandi
DeBlock in the box for trip-
ping, Ashley Ritchie fired in a
Kerrie Meier pass behind
McLagan in the Elma Logan
cage.
The teams retired for a
break between periods with a
1-1 tie.
Brussels/Belgrave came out
on fire for the- third period
outshooting their opponent by
by on the powerplay when
Amanda Hill, from Cameron,
found the top corner with a
slapshot from the high circle
to end the first period.
In a span of two minutes
midway in the second,
Saugeen erupted with a three-
goal flurry. Scoring were:
Jocelyn Carter, Jackie -Zacher
and Crystal Ferguson with
assists to: Kellington,
Brittany Roberts and Sheddon
respectively.
Hill rounded out the scoring
unassisted in the last period
for the 5-0 sweep. Terri Allen
had an easy day in this 32-3
shoot-out but was there when
needed.
Even in the pre-game warm
up, it was obvious who came
to play the next day against
Buffalo and Saugeen quickly
found themselves backed onto
their heels for the entire first
period. Only the solid play of
Allen kept the period score-
a large margin. The home
team earned themselves
another power play chance
and some powerful shots
almost resulted in the go-
ahead marker.
Nicki Berfeltz made some
spectacular saves giving her
teammates a chance to win
this contest.
Coach McDonald had high
regards for his players admir-
ing their hard work and tena-
cious checking.
He admitted he didn't know
what to expect with the lapse
over the holidays and his girls
having had several games and
practices cancelled due to
inclement weather.
less as Saugeen managed two
shots on Rochester.
A goalie can only do so
much, however, as Rochester
scored early back-to-back
goals to open the second peri-
od. The Lightning showed
some signs of life when
Walker and Roberts clicked
less than a minute later but
Buffalo had the final say
going up 3-1 with 15 seconds
left in the period.
Down 4-1 late in the third
period, after receiving a pass
from Katie Whytock, sheer
determination by Walker
brought the game within
reach as she added to
Saugeen's total, bulldozing
her way to the net. Buffalo
held off the Lightning charge,
which had the extra attacker
on for the final two minutes.
Saugeen will be looking for
revenge as they host Buffalo
in Howick for a double head-
er on Jan. 14.
It was an early morning start
for the Brussels Novices when
they travelled to Bayfield, Jan
4, for a tournament. The squad
took on the hosts in an 8 a.m.
match-up and in spite of being
shut-out, it was a very close
game with good work by all
the players.
Ryan Smith was kept busy
in net, stopping many great
shots to keep the score to just
3-0. A late rush by Brendan
Stretton and Randy Zwep
- almost put Brussels on the
board but they were thwarted.
Cody Subject was named
team MVP for the game.-
The second contest was the
most exciting of the three tour-
nament games, going to dou-
ble overtime to determine the
winner.
Belmore scored first.
Brussels came close to
evening the tally shortly after-
wards when Stretton took the
puck in from the blueline and
passed to Chris Becker out
front whose shot was deflected
wide.
Good defence was shown by
Herbie Runstedler and
Subject.
A clearing shot from
Brianne Wheeler ended up on
Stretton's -stick who took it in
for the tying goal.
Taylor Prior opened the sec-
ond period with a shot out of
the corner which deflected off
the Belmore goalie for a setter,
but Belmore drew even sec-
onds later when a scramble in
front of Smith resulted in a
goal.
Smith was hot, stopping shot
after shot to aid his offence.
Stretton, Zwep and Subject
each had opportunities to pull
the team ahead, but a strong
Belmore squad prevented easy
shots. Brian Burgess worked
hard along the boards while
killing a penalty and Joel
Wilkinson controlled the puck
in his own end to turn around
the play.
Defensive play by Thomas
Johnston stopped a rush early
in the third before teammate
Prior put Brussels ahead again.
However, Belmore retaliated
quickly to even the score at
three.
In spite Sr an intensive
attack by Brussels, the stale-
mate could not be broken.
Prior narrowly missed winning
the match in the five-minute
overtime when his shot went
off the post.
A one-minute overtime with
no goalies was played with
Belmore netting the puck just
18 seconds in.
Strong efforts were also
shown by Andrew Watson and
Cole McLean as they worked
the puck to the opponent's
end. Blake Cardiff and Trista
Deitner dug the puck out along
the boards to keep the game
moving.
Wheeler was named MVP.
With the two losses,
Brussels moved to the C final.
The opposing Goderich squad
took the lead in the first and
strong defence kept Brussels
off the board. The final tally
was 4-0.
Smith was named MVP.
The squad journeyed north
to Ayton Saturday to partici-
pate in another tournament.
Meeting Elora for an 11 a.m.
game, Brussels was kept off
the board through the first two
periods while Elora racked up
three.
Robert Cronin, Gavin
Bowers and Wheeler were
-strong on defensive plays
while Subject continued his
patented play of throwing his
body in front of the puck.
Wilkinson's speed served the
team well as he was able to
poke check the puck away
from a rushing opponent.
Brussels finally netted the
puck at 8:38 of the third when
Prior pushed in a rebound off a
Stretton shot. Down 5-I,
Stretton and Prior teamed up
again for the team's second
goal with Prior earning the
point at 4:05 on a nice passing
play.
Elora topped off their scor-
ing with two more, ending the
game with a 7-2 win.
Smith' was again steady in
net, deflecting shots over his
head and sprawling to block
rebounds. He also made a
great glove save late in the
third.
The loss pitted Brussels
against West Lorne at 7:30
p.m. In spite of being shut out
in the 6-0 loss, the team
showed some good works.
Wilkinson and Wheeler
combined to squeeze out a
breaking player and Cronin
rushed repeatedly into the
West Lorne end to follow up
on a long pass by a teammate.
Cardiff's stick work resulted
in stolen pucks and Becker and
Johnston teamed up twice for
very nice passes from the blue-
line in for a shot though they
were stopped. Deitner worked
both bluelines, clearing her
zone and keeping the puck in
the opponent's end.
