Co-op students get taste of working world
Kendra Fischer
My name is Kendra Fischer. I am
a grade 12 student at F.E. Madill
Secondary School. This year I
decided it would be a good idea to
take the Co-operative Education
Program.
My placement is at the law office
of John W. Schenk in Wingham. It
is a really nice place to work. They
are very efficient and they are very
good people.
Some of the tasks I perform
include filing, photocopying,
typing, and other secretarial type
jobs. I like doing this work and I
think I will go into this field after
graduation.
So far I like civil law the best,
but I would like to expand into
business law and maybe even
criminal law.
I would like to become a legal
assistant and I would like to go to a
college that has a co-op program. I
know that you have to have
experience in the legal field to get a
co-op placement, so I value our
program.
I would like to thank my teacher,'"
Mr. Gilchrist and my supervisors,
Mr. Schenk and Sandra Haslem for
giving me the experience to
broaden my understanding of law.
Sarah McNichol
My name is Sarah McNichol, and
I'm a co-op student at F.E. Madill
Secondary School. My co-op
placement is in Blyth, at
Chauncey's and the owner is Judy
Carter-Brown.
I'm really enjoying the co-op
program. It gives you work
experience and lets you know if
this is what you want to do. It lets
you know what all there is to do in
this field, which is good because
you know before you go to college
and spend lots of money, instead of
going to college and finding out
after that, that's not what you want
.to do.
I mostly work on mannequin's
hair, but I'll be working on
customer's hair once Judy things
I'm ready. Some jobs I have
observed are hair shampooing,
cutting, colouring, perming, and
styling.
Judy runs the business herself, so
she's the only one I work with. I
really enjoy working with her, she
is preparing me for things I will be
learning in college, which is good
because I'll have a good
understanding when I go to college.
Korey Bray
This is my second year taking co-
op. Last year I was working at
CKNX-TV (now called "The NEW
NX). This year I'm working as a
teacher assistant at F.E. Madill
Secondary School in the
Communications Technology
classes. I'm helping students with
the equipment, working on the
computers, setting up new
equipment around the classroom
and helping out where needed.
I also manage the school's radio
station. My supervisor is Greg
Rundle. He is the Communications
Technology Teacher at Madill.
I really enjoy working 'as a
Teacher Assistant. I'm really
pleased at how well the students
want to learn from me. By doing
this as my co-op placement, you
really get to see and get a feel for
what teachers have to go through
each and everyday. Believe me, it
isn't easy work, especially when
students do things they are not to
be doing.
Communications Technology is a
hands-on course, which involves a
lot of expensive equipment. You
always have to keep an eye, on the
class to ensure students are using it
properly and with extreme care.
This course is giving students the
skills for jobs that will be in
demand' after the year 2000. It
involves a lot of work, but I know
students are learning a lot from it
and are having fun at the same
time.
Scott Somers
Hi, my name is Scott Somers. I
am the son of Ross and Judy
otookir emus Thls4
4)4,
Somers of Brussels and attend F.E.
Madill Secondary School. I am
currently enrolled in the co-op
program at the school and my
placement is at G.&M. Auto parts
in Brussels.
For anyone unfamiliar with the
business, G.&M. is a new business
that opened in May 1998 on the
north end of main street. It is
owned by Bill Glousher who has
10 years of parts experience and
Gary McArter who is a licensed
mechanic. Gary's wife Kim also
works in the business as secretary.
Both men are familiar to the area
as they grew up in this farming
community and feel they can
provide a service to the farmers and
small businesses.
After approaching G.&M. in the
spring of 1998 to see if they were
interested in having a co-op student
I was fortunate enough to be
offered some part-time work in the
summer. My duties at G,&M. may
include anything from picking up
parts from a supplier in Toronto to
local farm and business delivery.
There are also a lot of steps in
between, such as sorting and
stocking of parts, computer
transacting and inventory tracking.
Other work experience may include
telephone orders, over the counter
sales and mixing paint for a
customer.
I am having difficulty deciding
what direction to go after
graduation. I have work experience
in a couple of trades through
summer and part-time jobs. Being a
co-op student at G.&M. will add
another work experience and may
help me make that decision.
Darlene Hemingway
Grade 12 student in an
elementary school? It seems
strange. Through the Co-operative
Education Program at F.E. Madill
Secondary. School in Wingham, I
have the opportunity to experience
what being a teacher's assistant is
like in an elementary school. I'm
Darlene Hemingway and I'm
working with Miss Ruth Balyta, the
-music teacher at Brussels Public
School. I assist her in her afternoon
schedule at Brussels. I perform
various tasks such as marking, one
-on-one extra help and
photocopying. I work with Miss
Balyta in grade 4 music and
language studies as well as grade 5-
8 music classes. I feel this
experience will help me in my
career choice for the future.
I chose co-op because I want to
know if teaching is what I want to
go through university for. I feel co-
op is extremely beneficial to
students in high school. It gives
them the opportunity to gain
knowledge and experience before
deciding how to further their
education. It also gives the
opportunity for possible summer
employment. Although some
placements are not always in the
student's desired field for the
future, it still gives a better,,
knowledge of the working world.
