From the sidelines Bodyguards must adapt By Hugh Nichol It now appears that Jeff Kugel will be playing in the Ontario Hockey League next year. Kugel, a member of the Windsor Major "A" Spitfires, gained instant recognition in the hockey world when on Oct. 25 he came off the bench, sucker punched a defenseless Owen Sound player, then chased another across the ice in an act of sheer lunacy. Based on the above and following a statement by Kugel that his role was to strike fear into opposing players, OHL commissioner David Branch assessed the 6' 7", 255 lb winger the stiffest penalty in Canadian Hockey League history: a 25-game suspension and banishment for life from the Ontario Hockey League. However, upon listening to Kugel's appeal two weeks later Branch apparently had a change of heart and opened the door for a possible return. Will Kugel be reinstated for the start of next season? Definitely! Why? Because fighting is accepted in hockey as is various other types of aggression. Canadian folklore is filled with stories of toughness, roughness, and intimida- tion; of fire and brimstone strategies designed to eliminate the opposition's effectiveness. People have a fascination with violence in sports, it repels and attracts at, the same time. Canadian hockey has always skated a thin line between hard hitting and bodily assault and while the hockey establishment has taken steps to reduce the unnecessary and excessive violence too many of us were raised on the Conn Smythe "If you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice" theory of hockey evolution to completely Brussels PeeWees have enjoyed a good week recently with a regular season win and solid play at a tour- nament. On Dec. 4, the squad hosted Blyth. While holding their visitors to just one goal, the home team tal- lied seven for a big victory. Scoring were Joel Hemingway with two, Devon Blake with two, Robbie McClure, Johnnie Engel, and Tyler Campbell. Assists went to Hemingway with two, Kyle Stephenson and Brandon Blake. On Saturday the team participat- ed in the Blyth Legion tournament. Their first match was against Luc- know, which they whitewashed 3- 0. Campbell, Szan Hoegy and Hem- ingway notched the Brussels goals. Hoegy and Blake got assists. Blyth bulged the twine first when Kendall Whitfield took a pass from Byron Broome at 7:47 of the first. .Brussels' Wade Stephenson, assisted by Ryan Jutzi, evened the score four minutes later, though Blyth quickly retook the lead. It was responsible for the return to respectability of the Boston Bruins in the late 1960s and was the guiding light behind the 1970s Philadelphia Flyers. Led by Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, the Broad Street Bullies perfected the controlled mayhem tactic winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with a lineup reminiscent of a World Wrestling Federation pay per view. It was the basis of success in the Hanover Barons' 10-year dominance of the Western Junior C League and remains an integral part of WOAA Senior Durham thundercats game plan. And although not as successful the playoff tactics used by Muncey and Walpole Island will forever be remembered in Blyth Minor Hockey debates. Kugel's willingness to protect his teammates is admirable but his methods should not be condoned nor idolized by today's minor hockey generation. Although it is the Dave Semenko type bodyguards that allows the Wayne Gretzky's to reach stardom, teams are unwilling to commit to a player strictly for his pugilistic abilities. As a player's enthusiasm and effectiveness to engage in battle begins to fade he must adapt or be deemed expendable. For every Bob Probert that matures into a full time player there are 10 Dave Semenkos that could not or would not change their style. Hockey is a passion that allows us to escape from the realities of everyday existence. Its emotionalism allows two people to become completely irrational over what happened on the same play, at the same time, in the same place. It is for this reason we believe Jeff Kugel when he says, "I never meant to hurt anyone." against Ripley. The opposition showed they meant business early scoring two quick goals in the first before Hemingway finally man- aged one to close the gap before going into the second period. Ripley took a two-point lead back in the second which they held through to the end of the period. After Ripley opened the third with their fourth goal, Brussels started to turn it around with goals in quick succession by Hemingway and Campbell. Unable to capitalize on any more scoring opportunities, the team added to their woes by allowing Ripley to knock in one more point ending the game at 5-3 in their favour. Assisting on these goals were Campbell, Brandon Blake with two and Engel with two. Assists went to Whitfield and Broome. Blyth shutdown their opponent, holding them scoreless through the final periods while they popped two of their own. At 11:22 of the third, Cody Reid passed to Curtis Robertson who slid it in. With only 16 seconds remaining, Whitfield topped off the game with her second goal. Peters and Roman Sturzcnegger earned the assists. Tykes play On ,)aturday, the Brussels Tykes hosted Blyth in an exhibition game. Four minutes into the game Ben Gowing fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net to give Brussels a 1-0 lead.
