First-timers set record for Blyth Festival
More first-time attendees visited
Blyth Festival in 1998 than in any
year since the theatre has been
keeping records.
At the same time, an unusually
high number of long-time fans
voted their approval by purchasing
memberships in record numbers - a
16 per cent increase.
"Those who make the extra
commitment of taking out a
membership understand that the
Blyth Festival is much more than
just another good summer theatre.
Our standards of acting and set
design equal those of any other
theatre in the country, even theatres
with twice our budget." said
Artistic Director. Anne Chislett.
"Blyth presents plays that reflect
the joys and concerns of average
Canadians, and that makes us very,
very special. Add to that our policy
of producing brand new work —
Blyth's exciting world premieres —
and this Festival is truly unique."
The Festival is already planning
to build on last season's success
with the critics and with the
audience. "The reviews were
extraordinary, particularly the raves
from every paper for Thirteen
Hands," said Chislett.
"But more important to the staff
and cast were the consistent
standing ovations all the plays were
given by the audience. Everyone at
the Festival has been enormously
encouraged by a high volume of
cards, letters and phone calls
praising last summer's shows.
Many people I meet are still
happily recalling how much they
laughed in Yesteryear, and Keith
Roulston's Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!"
Can the Festival top the artistic
success of 1998?
"1999 is our Silver Season — the
25th since the Festival's founding
in 1975 — and wait till you hear
what we've got lined up!" said
Chislett, who is planning to make
the new playbill public in time for
Blyth's annual general meeting on
Dec. 10. (The Blyth Festival
Membership receive advance
notice in the just-mailed
newsletter.)
One thing Chislett will announce
immediately is that the whole
creative team from 1998 is back
and already busy. In addition to
Chislett and General Manager
Karen Stewart, the creative team
once again includes Production
Manager David James, and
Honourary Associate Artist Jerry
Franken.

Celebrating a birthday
The Blyth Pathfinders, Guides and Brownies joined the Sparks in celebrating the national
Spark organization's 10th birthday last week. Spark Leader Ruth Uyl was also presented
with a gift for starting the Blyth troupe four years ago.
The Blyth Swinging Seniors met
in the Blyth Memorial Hall on Nov.
25 at noon for their annual
Christmas dinner.
About 51 seniors and guests sat
down to a delicious dinner. The
tables looked lovely and the hall
was beautifully decorated as well
so it left no doubt Christmas is
near.
After dinner, President Lawrence
Plaetzer called a short business
meeting. The November birthdays
were Elva Brown, Graeme
McDowell, Rev. Schultz and John
Blake. Mrs. and Mrs. Hulzebos had
a November anniversary.
A minute's silence was observed
in memory of Phyllis Boak.
