Many of you are wondering what in the world this has to do with us. With me. In a concrete sense, probably very little. But as members of the United Church of Canada, we as a denomination will be facing many such hard issues in the days to come. As the Moderator says, "We must now seek ways of healing ourselves, as well as our relationships with First Nations peoples." When the people of Jerusalem were faced with the prospect of persecution, Jesus told them not to prepare their defense in advance. Jesus said, "I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict." In a litigation society, our court system is being called upon to answer a lot of the questions that we need to also ask ourselves. Events of the past do come back to haunt us. But Isaiah's world knew the reality of a painful past and they were willing to look with eagerness towards the future. Despite the past, our future can be whatever we claim it to be. Perhaps, as Jesus said, we don't need to be defensive when we are truly open to the inspiration of God. When it comes to situations such as these, we can rely on the wisdom of a power far greater than ourselves.
