Congratulations to the organizers on your 37th year.
I trust this celebration of Huron's Agricultural tradition will once again
be very successful.

1998 HURON PIONEER THRESHER REUNION & HOBBY SHOW
Adults can try their hands at old- world practices
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff
An interest in the way it was is what
brought Wayne Lowe of Brussels to the
Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and
Hobby Show.
And after lending a hand with the adult
special events for several years, he is now
in charge and looking ahead. "This year
we have the familiar events, but we have
been kicking around a few ideas for years
to come."
Keeping things fresh, attracting new
competitors, yet not losing tradition, is an
important balance. "The events are more
for old-timers who want to try their hand
once again. But we have some young ones
who have been competing for the last few
years and they must be practising because
they've come a long way," says Lowe.
Belt-setting, bag tying, log sawing, they
all have an entertainment factor, says
Lowe, adding that it's always fun to see
someone "get that saw in the log and think
they're going to race through it."
But it is the art of belt setting that he
personally finds exciting. "Particularly
with the steam engines, the trick to belt
setting is something that fewer and fewer
know. There are just a handful of people
left who arc up to the challenge."
"It is an art in itself," he adds.
For those who enjoy fun and games, the
adult special events are held on Saturday
and Sunday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. in the
arca of the threshing demonstrations.

AN ANCIENT ART
The tricky business of belt-setting is one of the adult special events that requires
a certain amount of knowledge and know-how. Committee Chair Wayne Lowe
said that while the other events such as log-sawing and bag-tying can challenge
the novice, belt-setting is best undertaken by the experienced.
