PAGE 11. Blind obedience, theme of Duff's United sermon Steve and Kathy Huether were greeters at Duffs United Church Sept. 6. Rev. James Murray welcomed everyone. He reminded all that next Sunday children are invited to attend Sunday School. The UCW will meet Wednesday night this week at 8 p.m. The board will meet next Sunday night at 8 p.m. Rev. Murray called the children forward and showed them how to make a dinosaur out of clay. Well it sort of looked like a dinosaur, but he quickly changed it into something else. He said, "We are With the 1999 plowing match only a year away, a picnic and a brief meeting was held at Helen and Graeme Craig's place for the 200 people from various The board of directors of the Huron United Way announced the appointment of Bruce Shaw to the position of general campaign chair for the 1998 fall campaign. As a former mayor of Exeter for 18 years and principal of four - county high schools, Exeter, Continued from page 4 executive positions and the many obligations that come with those jobs, it seemed necessary to gather the 'troops' and assess the situation. Seventy letters were sent out to past and present volunteers and other area agencies that have supported us in the past and an announcement of the meeting was placed in all the area newspapers. From those letters and announce- ments three were returned with incorrect addresses, five calls of support came in to the office, but they were unable to attend the meeting, and two people other than the executive or relatives actually were present, bringing the grand total in attendance to 14. It was very disappointing to note the lack of support for such an important service as HCHAN. AIDS is not going away. There is no known cure for the disease at this time. There are still new cases every year, yes, in Huron County, too. Without HCHAN educating the schools in our county and surrounding areas, those numbers will grow. Without funding to support the education and support groups that are offered, HCHAN will not survive, and most importantly, without the people to educate and fundraise and support other individuals in these endeavors like clay in God's hands. He can mold us and help us change but he never just tosses us aside." Rev. Murray's sermon was called, "So what are we to give up here?" He had a joke about a soldier following orders-blind obedience to the rules makes life easy. Blind obedience, he said, means people don't have to think about what they are supposed to do next. Someone else will tell them what to do, what to think, what to believe. But being blind, people don't get to see what all their options arc. committees. I had no idea that there were that many people involved in the planning committees but Graeme said that by next year there will be around 1,000 people. Please consider this option and what it will mean to our county as we approach Sept. 27 and the WALK for AIDS. It would be great to see your support in pledges and/or walkers for this important day. More information can be obtained from calling the office 482-1141 and leaving a message as we also have no funding for staff. Someone will return your call right They don't get to see what else is possible, or ask the right questions. "Being blind, we don't see that we are truly free." While on holidays this summer Rev. Murray attended a conference for a week which looked at how philosophy, science and religion could come together. One person that he met was Dimitri Spivak, who works at the Human Brain Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has been studying the effects of religious experiences on the human brain. One of his findings is that the human brain never does anything the same way twice. He says the brain is hardwired for creativity. It is designed to exercise free will. People are made for making choices. They are not meant to be blindly obedient. Centuries ago the church often thought it would be best if everyone would be blindly obedient to the church's authority, Rev. Murray' said. The church thought children could be taught to become Christian by getting them to Sorry, our mistake Huron Chapel Missionary Church was incorrectly named in the cutline under the picture of Pas- tor and Mrs. Jim Carrie in last week's issue of The Citizen. By the way, those 14 devoted people have decided that AIDS is too important an issue to let the agency die so we are going ahead for another year, but we would so like to hear from others who would give of themselves and their time for such a worthy cause. The Christian teachings arc far too important to be reduced simply to a group of memory verses, he said. Faith is something which develops through living, it. "Think it through and use it in your daily life," he said. Faith can't grow simply by reciting the names of the books of the Bible. "These are not magic words with special powers. You have to know what is in those books of the Bible if they arc to be of any help. For Christian faith to be meaningful today, you have to be able to apply it to your daily situation," Rev. Murray said. B. Shaw chairs UW campaign Writer seeks support for walk
