From the Minister's Study
Each person's special gifts, gifts from God
By Rev. Cathrine Campbell
Melville Presbyterian, Brussels
Knox, Belgrave
Not long ago I went to visit my
aunt. She is a lady of 80 some years
and has for the last four years been
in a mining home in Detroit as she
now has Alzheimer's Disease and
needs much care.
My aunt doesn't know who I am,
which is sad for me, but I do know
who she is and what she has been
and done for so many over the
years.
My aunt and uncle travelled a lot,
he always in control of a superior
35 millimetre camera and she in
charge of her Kodak - from Baby
Brownie onward. Over the years
there were many pictures taken,
and always, if you wanted to see
Pastor Ben Wiebe gave the
message entitled, "Treasure in
Earthen Vessels" on Sunday, July
11 at Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship.

Wiegersma was pianist. Tim
what happened on their trip you
looked at my aunt's snapshots for
the 35 millimetre slides and prints
were usually of flora and fauna and
did not show the people that make
a journey so very interesting.
When my uncle died their house
had to be sold so as to continue my
aunt's care in the nursing home.
With this sale the conservators
needed to know what to do with the
photograph albums and slides. The
rest of the extended family were
not interested in such trivia and so
my sisters and I said we would take
the albums.
I picked them up on on my trip to
Detroit and I am now trying to sort
out pictures (and am very grateful
that my aunt wrote names and dates
on the back of pictures). I am living
with some very happy memories
Procter played for the offertory.
Following the Christian
Education Hour, the congregation
gathered at Martin's Landing for a
potluck meal and fellowship.
The group is busy this week,
hosting Kid's Corner for area
and some sadness for the vital
couple I knew for so many years
who are now gone.
However, their giving continued,
for tucked in one of the albums was
the family "tree" which my aunt
had been working on. It gives order
to fragmented scraps of knowledge
that I had and I am grateful that I
was able to receive probably the
most valuable of my aunt's
possessions - her sense of self, of
family and of place in this world.
And these memories are more
powerful and more lasting than any
manufactured item and remind me
once again that it is what is in our
hearts and minds that gives us the
joy and the strength to go on with
our lives.
Jesus did not leave wealth or
possessions but he did leave us
children.
There will be no service at
Brussels next Sunday since the
congregation is invited to worship
and fellowship with its exchange
church, Mannheim Mennonite
Church.
with a picture of a loving, caring,
joyous man of whom the memory
will never fade. There is no need
for a photo album for we have the
written Word of God to provide us
with the pictures we need and the
roots of our family tree.
As I put away the new photos of
my nephews feeding the lambs at
Sharina Sheep Farm I give thanks
that those moments can be captured
for future time and I give thank!
always that all moments are a gif
from God - to be treasured and tc
be shared.
I have a 35 millimetre camera
and a very basic Kodak and every
time I use either I will remembea
my aunt and uncle. Each generation
brings its own gifts and it is all
from that one great gift the creating
love of God.
