Brussels Livestock report Holstein veal prices fall $2 to $3, avg. $70 to $82 The sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending July 10 were: fed cattle, 606; cows, 206; veal and bob calves, 376; lambs and goats, 223; and stockers, 758. The fed steers and heifers sold $1 lower. Cows sold on a steady market. Beef veal sold steady with Holstein veal selling $2 - $3 lower. Light lambs traded steady with heavy lambs selling under pressure. Stockers sold on a steady market. There were 385 steers on offer selling from $90 to $94 to the high of $99.50. Six steers consigned by John Smuck, Wingham, averaging 1,260 lbs. sold for an average of $93.49 with sales to $99.50. Forty steers consigned by by J. K. Gielen Farms, Crediton, averaging 1,414 lbs. sold for an average of $90.67 with sales to $98.50. Ten steers consigned by Lauderlea Farms, Listowel, averaging 1,325 lbs. sold for an average of $94.48 with sales to $98.25. The 1998 Pork Congress enjoyed great weather and large crowds, with approximately 5,000 people in attendance. Complementary luncheons, a Farmer's Daughter concert, a record number of exhibitors and many other attractions created a festive atmosphere for the 25th anniversary celebration. The Honourable Lyle Vanclief, a former pork producer, joined in the festivities, opening the 25th anniversary event and presenting two Ontario Pork Congress Industry Leadership Awards. Dr. Tim Blackwell and the late Warren Stein were named the 1998 Ontario Pork Congress Industry Leadership Award winners. Erica Mills of Wentworth County left her mark by winning the Junior Barrow Show, Grand Champion Showman, the President's Cane Award for the Grand Champion Showman and the Lyle Hellman Memorial Award. Reserve Grand Champion Showman was awarded to Jennifer Smith from Elgin County. The $1,000 Gold Sponsor Draw Prize Winner was Dennis Peters from Embro. The Ontario Pork Congress features all segments of the pork industry and provides a unique forum for discussion and information sharing on industry trends, innovations and direction. The pork industry has seen a lot of change over the past quarter century, and is prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
