Tigers blast Walton in 8th The Brussels Tigers combined timely hitting and strong pitching from their starter and reliever to grind out an extra-inning win over the Walton Brewers in Huron County fastball action, Tuesday, July 7 in Walton. The Brewers hit the board first in their first at bat as Steve Knight cashed Jeff Robinson and Dan McNichol, who were both aboard to take a 2-0 lead. The Tigers hit the score sheet in the top of the third and took a 3-2 lead. Greg Fritz doubled and was promptly plated by a Tim Fritz triple to the gap in left centre. One out later Todd Uhrig doubled to cash Fritz. Doug Conley then scored Uhrig with an RBI hit to briefly give the Tigers the lead. Walton knotted the score at three The Hullett Squirt Girls ball team had a productive week as they tal- lied two victories. Travelling to Holmesville, July 6, to take on Goderich Twp., the game began as a very low scoring match- up as the host held a 2-0 lead through two. Hullett broke out in the third, pushing seven runners home. While adding one in the fourth and five in the fifth and holding Goderich Twp. to only two, Hullett held a 13-4 got going into the bot- tom of the fifth inning. Brussels took the lead again in the top of the fifth as with one out Tim Fritz doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. Moe Pipe plated Fritz with a sac hit to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. The back and forth scoring continued in the bottom of the inning as Huether scored on a Terry Elligsen RBI single to centre. With the score tied at the end of seven, it went to the eighth where the visitors erupted for five runs in the top. With Greg Fritz on third and one out, Pipe walked to put runners on the corners. The Brewers chose to intentionally walk Uhrig to load the bases to get to Conley. Conley topped a ball towards the mound which Walton starter Scott hard, scoring eight in their at-bat to draw to within one. Hullett did not let up, adding five in the sixth then narrowly escaping with the win when Goderich Twp. tallied five as well, one short of a 'ie. Cindy Reinink, Amy Welch and Dawn Dolmage shared time on the mound. Two days later, the squad chal- lenged Goderich in a see-saw battle which was not decided until the final at-bat. Hullett struck early and often, Listowel, however, as they led by one at half time and added another early in the second half. The B2s showed the spirit and determination they have demonstrated all year and continued to battle back despite the two-goal deficit. Their efforts paid off as Greg Bowers netted one. the second, the Hullett defense let Goderich Twp. back in the game with eight runs. Stretching their lead to eight, Hullett allowed their opponents to score just twice in the bottom of the third. With a strong hold on the game, Assists were earned by Raymond deBoer and Mike Bonair. The hometown kickers took a 2-0 lead when a throw-in from Bonair was converted to a goal by Cody Anderson. VanAmersfoort got the assist. Cook ended it with two strike- outs. Needing two runs to win, Walton woke up the bats and cleared their eyes for a seven-run rally. McDonald led-off with a walk, followed by singles from Gibbons and McClure. Cook crushed a grand slam for the win. Walks were also handed to Short- reed, Hulley and Beuermann. The final was 17-10 for Walton. Leonhart bobbled allowing Greg Fritz to score the go-ahead run. Heads up base running by Pipe produced another run as he scored on a wild pitch with a great hook slide. Steve Fritz then hammered a triple off the fence cashing two more runs. Brian Neill's ground out to second rounded out the scoring barrage making the final 9-4. For the Tigers Tim Fritz was three for four while Greg Fritz went two for three. Conley and Uhrig shared the pitching chores, combining to fan 10 Brewers. On Friday night the Tigers picked up two points with a forfeit by the Goderich Gardiners who showed up with only seven players. Next home action for the Tigers is Friday as they tangle with the C4th Reds at 7:30 p.m. putting nine on the scoreboard before Goderich crossed the plate. The hometeam earned five runs in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 9-5 then added five in the third to surge ahead. Hullett went on top in the fourth with three runs before securing their lead with seven in the fifth. Goderich managed only three in their final turn at the plate. Hullett won 19-12. Dolmage pitched the entire game as well as belting a homerun in the fourth. Brussels continued to press, led by the strong play of James Durrell and Tamara Koehler. In the end it was too little, too late as the final score was Listowel 2, Brussels 1. Andrew McDonald and Doug Schnock shared the goal tending duties, both playing strong games in the goal and on the field. Hullett finished their attack with two runs. Goderich Twp. scored once in their final at-bat. The final was 19-12. Derek Dolmage, Samantha McVittie and Julian Bolinger shared pitching duties. However, the defense would not hold, allowing Lucknow to tie the match. On July 9, up against the Luck- now Legion squad, Blyth again scored first when good foot control exhibited by deBoer assisted in a net-bulging shot from Sean Laffin. Lucknow evened the score, end- ing the game in a tie. Bats were hot when Hullett and Listowel Midget Girls met in fastball action in Hullett on July 8. On the mound for the home team was Amanda Anderson in the first half of the game and Meredith Collyer in relief.
