Blyth council briefs Village receives OPP bill Tracey and David Werkema Blyth council reviewed insurance proposals from Cowan Insurance Co. and Jardine OME Ltd., at the July 6 session, for renewal of the village's insurance. A report will be prepared for the next meeting. 5*. After hearing a request from Mike McDonald on behalf of the Storm ball team, council stated there were no objections to the team making an application to the LLBO for a special occasions per- mit for a co-ed ball tournament to be held July 30-Aug. 2 and for a beer garden tent to be placed between the two ball diamonds. The 37th annual Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show was proclaimed a community festi- val and there were no objections to the association applying for a spe- cial occasions permit from the LLBO. *5* Greg McClinchey spoke to coun- cil regarding his obligations to the village if he purchased three lots in Union Street which is currently an unopened road allowance. McClinchey will meet with Clerk-Treasurer John Stewart to draft details of a proposal for coun- cil's review. ass Council appointed Reeve Mason Bailey to the Tax Equity Alliance for a membership fee of $25. *5* The village will receive $13,094 from the provinces special circum- stances fund to help alleviate extra costs due to downloading. The invoice for first quarter policing costs was $24,421, to be paid by Oct. 1. ass Bailey and Stewart were autho rind to sign a site plan agreement on behalf of the municipality, with Howson and Howson Ltd., regard- ing the development along Cty. Rd. 25. ass Councillors Rob Lawrie, Doug Scrimgeour and Jeff Howson and Clerk-Treasurer Stewart will attend the Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual conference in Toronto, Aug 23-26. 11.11,5 The Blyth road committee was dissolved. Grads earn awards Pair weds in WERKEMA -BUYS David Werkema and Tracey Marianne Buys were married June 13, 1998 in the Owen Sound Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Kevin De Raaf officiating. Owen Sound Tracey is the daughter of John and Ria Buys of Owen Sound. David is the son of Frank and Jane Werkema of Blyth. After having spent their honeymoon in BC, the couple now resides at RR 3, Blyth. As the graduating class of Blyth Public School celebrated the end of the year, numerous awards were handed out to the students. Jenny Ritchie was named vale- dictorian as well as receiving recognition as most improved female. The individual subject awards went to : Mike Walsh, English, his- tory and general proficiency; Amanda Bailey, most improvement in English; Kristin Oster, French and math; Jackie Falconer, music; Jamie Lewis, art; Steven Empey, science; Sonya Schulti, geography; Ashley Taylor, most improvement in math; Matt Hill, family studies; Nick Courtney, design and technol- ogy; Devin Shannon, .computer technoldgy and Shaun Henry, most improved male. Jamie Lewis received the Peace- maker award and Robin Mason earned citizenship honours. On the athletic field, Jamie Lewis was recognized as top female in track and field and Steven Empey taking top male honours. Top male athlete overall was Shaun Henry and top female was Kristin Oster. The most improved athletes were Rachel deBoer and Matt Hill.
