From the Minister's Study Applying for a spiritual birth certificate By James H. Came, Sr. Pastor The Missionary Church, Auburn He was surprised, somewhat, when I handed him his birth certificate. He was 83 years old, after all, but he had not qualified for one until now. About a week ago he put his faith in Christ to save him, his name was written in the Lamb's Book of Life and, born again, he qualified to have a spiritual birth certificate issued to him. In an interesting coincidence, I presented one, at the same time, to his seven-year-old granddaughter who had also come to faith in Christ. While neither of them possessed a spiritual birth certificate before, they both had been issued death certificates. Just as Adam and Eve had been assured by God that, in the day that they sinned, death would pass upon them, so "... sin entered the world through one man, and in this way, death came to all men, because all sinned ..." (Romans 5:12). So, thanks to Adam, and the sinful inclinations with which we were born, we all have qualified for a death certificate. I sat in rapt wonder last Saturday morning as I listened to a young man tell of his experience with death. He recounted a tale of abuse as a child and as a product of a dysfunctional home. He told of his teenage bondage to alcohol and eventually to hard drugs. He entered into the nether world of drug-dealing. Then he met some Christian teens who seemed to be having more fun that he was and whose lives were satisfying in a way that his was not. Through their influence he was introduced to the One who said that He had come "that they may have life and have it to the full" (John 10:10) and he passed from death into life. He has been able to leave behind all the bondage of death, as a consequence, and to live a productive and redemptive life. He, too, has in his possession a spiritual birth certificate. A birth certificate identifies us as a citizen of the country in which we were born. Should we choose to travel to other countries, our birth certificate becomes the basis upon Which our passport is issued. When we stand at the gate of heaven, seeking admission, the question to us will not be, "How good have you been?" but, rather, "Birth certificate, please?"
