Graduation will mean some difficult goodbyes
By Rosalyn Hartman
On behalf of the graduating class
of Hullett Central, I would like to
welcome everyone here tonight. I
would also like to thank my
classmates for choosing me to be
their valedictorian.
Tonight is the night we've all
been waiting for. Graduation is the
last day of our final year at Hullett.
This is a day that we've looked
forward to with
anticipation, but
now that it's
finally arrived,
we face more
than a few
difficult
goodbyes. While
some of us head
for high school
in Clinton, some
will be heading
for Grade 9 at
GDCI in Goderich.
After eight or nine years together
as friends at Hullett, this will be a
sad farewell. Not to mention that
the many caring teachers and staff
who have guided us through our
years at Hullett, will be replaced
when we move on to high school,
with total strangers.
We began our first year in school
with Mr. Park, who, among other
memorable moments made a mock
wedding between hiin and Barbie
for our class. In Mr, Park's class,
everyone had a part to play, and
even the Fisher Price people had
personalities!
Then Mrs. Walter, Mrs. Pletsch
and Mrs. Bosman shared our class
for Grade 1. Mrs. Pletsch spent
hours on birthday books for our
large class, and Mrs. Bosman
always made huge birthday cookies.
And she never forgot the summer
birthdays either.
Next we met Mrs. Radford whose
specialty was chess, a game lots of
us still like to play.
Mr. Sanders was the first teacher
to give us serious choices. We got
to do a cowboy unit and a medieval
unit. And in his unofficial role as
school photographer, he has
captured many of our memorable
school moments on film.
Mr. Livermore was our sports
expert, and shared his knowledge
with us.
Mme Rae tried to teach us the
finer points of French, a difficult
task I'm sure!
Mrs. Stennett's specialty was
music, and although she taught us
more than music, she really led our
band.
Mr. Medd and Mrs. Moore had
the privilege of sharing us for Grade
7. Mrs. Moore, our Australian
exchange teacher, shared her
country's customs and her great
Australian accent with us. And who
could ever forget Mr. Medd in his
famous Mrs. Doubtfire role!
And our final year at Hullett has
been a first for Mrs. Pletsch. We
had the honour of being Mrs.
Pletsch's first Grade 7 /8 class.
We've learned with her about many
things. We've learned about
Hyperstudio, resulting in a grad
year book full of memories of
Hullett. We went to Talisman to
ski, and to Peterborough on our
grad trip.
With rock picking, chocolate bar
sales, and a lasagna supper to help
pay our way, we learned how much
work it is. But we also know it was
worth it, and we had a lot of fun.
Other people we will remember
when we think of Hullett include
Mrs. Goos, our librarian, who was
always ready to lend a helping hand
with our Hyperstudio projects. Mr.
Bosnian, who besides making us
wear two pairs of shoes, you know,
the indoor ones and the outdoor
ones, also has a great sense of
humour. and he can fix almost
anything! Mrs. KoHunan, our school
secretary, who keeps our school,
and our principal, on track. And Mr.
Barker, our principal, who keeps the
rest of us on track. If there's one
thing that we've learned from Mr.
Barker, it's that everyone is
deserving of respect.
So this night is a celebration of a
job well done, by ourselves, but also
by our teachers and parents. So now
we head on to bigger schools,
bigger choices, and more decisions.
