The Wheelers have been active in the Brussels United Church and Brussels fair board. A family dinner was held July 5, with the couple's three children, Doug and his wife, Cathie, Jim and his wife, Diane, and Gerry and his wife, Brenda, as well as eight grandchildren. Ark's program underway Pool has ways to beat the heat On a wonderful Sunday after- noon, Lloyd and Helen (McCutcheon) Wheeler of Brussels celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at home, with family. The couple were wed July 3, 1948, at the Anglican Church recto- ry in Brussels, by Rev. J.H. Kerr. Mr. Wheeler's brother, Glen Wheeler, served as best man and Mrs. Wheeler's sister, Mary Barker, was maid of honour. After a honeymoon in Muskoka, The Junior Summer Recreation Program has started this summer at The Ark in Brussels. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday Grades 1 - 5 children are welcome to join their friends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Games, crafts, outings and activities are planned for the weekly themes. This week's theme is Animated Animals. Careers and the Community will be Monday, July 13 - Friday, July 17. Wet and Messy Madness runs from Monday, July 20 - Friday, It's the time of the year again when kids of all ages visit the local swimming pools in an attempt to stay cool. The BMG Pool in Brussels has something new for everyone this summer. The pool is hosting a "Sun Safe" day on July 15. The activities are to promote sunsceen and will run from 1-4 pm. There will be 200 ballots available at the pool, for chances to win many prizes. People of all ages are welcome to join the fun. The wading pool is now open during the day. Any children using that pool must be accompanied by somebody over the age of 12. Continuing programs this year include the Moms, Pops and Tots swim, which will be held weekdays from 1-3 p.m. Aquafit takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-9 p.m. The cost is $3 per person. By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Brussels council voted at its July 6 meeting to increase the budget for road and sidewalk work in order to complete some priority projects. After discussing a number of streets for paving, Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said that the budget- ted figure for roads was $30,000. Yvonne Kitchen, a resident of Brussels, attended the July 6 meet- ing with her husband Harvey to protest the removal of a streetlight from the front of their King Street home. Another light had been placed further to the west, but much of the lumination was blocked by a tree, Kitchen said. Out of concern for pedestrian safety, she asked council to consid- er replacing the light, a request they approved unanimously. could be done this year.
