Brussels council voted at its July
6 meeting to increase the budget for
road and sidewalk work in order to
complete some priority projects.
After discussing a number of
streets for paving, Clerk-Treasurer
Donna White said that the budget-
ted figure for roads was $30,000.
Councillor Greg Wilson made
the suggestion that council increase
the figure so that more of the work

An extra charge of $1,000 on the
auditor's bill prompted some mild
disapproval at Brussels council July
6.
Clerk Treasurer Donna White
said the charge was explained as
covering the extra costs for the
Homecoming celebration and the
history books.White told council
she had contacted Ward and Upti-
grove to question the fee as she felt

A missing streetlight is being
returned.
Yvonne Kitchen, a resident of
Brussels, attended the July 6 meet-
ing with her husband Harvey to
protest the removal of a streetlight
from the front of their King Street
home. Another light had been
placed further to the west, but
much of the lumination was
blocked by a tree, Kitchen said.
Out of concern for pedestrian
safety, she asked council to consid-
er replacing the light, a request they
approved unanimously.
could be done this year. "We've got
kids walking to school that have to
travel on the road because the side-
walk has sunk so low," he said.
"Let's increase the budget and do
two streets," he said.
The estimate from Lavis for one
block of paving on Ellen Street,
from Turnberry Street to John
Street, in the amount of $7,645 and
one block of Church Street from
'John to James in the amount of
$7,695 was accepted.
Also, work will be done on
Albert Street from Queen to
it was unwarranted.
The explanation she said, was
that Homecoming had so much
money go through in such a short
time.
"But I didn't feel they did $1,000
worth of extra work."
She told council that when it
comes time to tender for auditors
the next time these types of things
need to be considered.
However, it was also noted, that
while Ward and Uptigrove had
been told that Homecoming was
coming up when they tendered for
Cypress in the amount of $14,945
plus GST, with the PUC paying the
portion resulting from the water-
main project.
Tenders are being invited for two
blocks of sidewalks in conjunction
with the Ellen Street and Church
Street paving. These will be opened
at the next meeting of council, with
work to be completed by Sept. 15.
A third motion passed amending
the budget to show an increase of
$10,000 for road and sidewalk
repair.
the work, it was not part of the ten-
der.
"But I just feel that it was an
awful lot of money for a small por-
tion of work," said White.
