THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 1998. There was a lot of kicking at the Brussels arena game between the Wolves and the Panthers U-6 teams, June 11. The players were following right after the ball and all giving it their best efforts. Trista Deitner tried her best at stopping balls into the Panthers' net, but good kicking from Blake Cardiff resulted in the Wolves' first goal of the game. Shortly thereafter, Jolanda Smith made some good stops on net, but Vicki Blake's travelling and kicking resulted in the second Wolves' goal. In the second half, Randy Zwep's persistence paid off when after two close scores stopped ably by Meagan Higgins, he finally managed to put his third kick in past her, creating the first goal for the Panthers. The action continued in front of the Wolves net, but goalkeeper Annamieka Kerkhof worked hard preventing any of the many kicks from getting in past her. Blake again engaged in some awesome kicking and was able to sneak a goal in past Morgan Deitner. The game ended with lots of action in front of the Wolves net, allowing the Panthers goalkeeper, Robert Cronin to rest and watch. Meanwhile Wolves goalkeeper, Ty Sebastian was kept running to save any incoming balls to the Wolves net resulting in a final score of Wolves - 3, Panthers - 1. Game five for the Panthers was against the Bears at the arena on Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. A game between the Brussels Sharks and Wolves involved a lot of running and kicking from both ends of the field. All of the children tried their best, but only one team was able to score. The Sharks got 4. What was evident though, was great team effort on both teams. Nick Gowing was first in net for the Wolves and he made two great saves. Blake Cardiff was next. He made a great save from an awesome kick by the Sharks' Scott Sippel. Laurelita MacAldaz managed to sneak one by him though. Ty Sebastian was the next In exhibition play, June 15, the Brussels Pre-Mites were doubled by a strong Belgrave squad. Belgrave jumped out to an early lead, with eight runs, and never looked back. Two homeruns, two doubles and five singles were tallied in the first at-bat. With Dustin Lichty leading off the Brussels attack, he singled, before being tagged out when Brendan Stretton hit a double. Justin Pipe singled, pushing Stretton to third, but was out on a The Bears started off the game with a powerful goal on the Panthers. However, Holly Sholdice didn't let this slow her down as she made some great saves in net. In the Panthers' net was Jason Warwick who made two amazing stops. Brody Wright, defense, did a great job. During this first half of the game Gavin Bowers did a great job at covering the Bears. Brenda Stretton scored the Bears' second goal despite the Panthers skillful efforts. The ball was swiftly taken to the Bears' end by Randy Zwep of the Panthers. Dalton Hamilton had a great first half playing a large area. The Bears, No. 18 Rebecca Nichols, took a penalty shot on the Panthers' net which didn't result in another goal. Morgan Deitner took the ball to the Bears end where Ryan Baker, in net for the Bears had a powerful kick. This brought the game to halftime. The second half started with excellent defense for the Bears by Alexandria McDonald. Excellent retaliation was shown by Natalie White. No goal resulted from this due to Cole McLean's skillful save in the Bears' net. Trevor Raynard and Robert Cronin worked well as a team going for the Bear's net. It was Randy Zwep who finally got a goal for the Panthers. Jolanda Smith ended the game with a fantastic save in the Panthers' net. The final score was 2-1 for the Bears. Wolves' goalie. He stopped one from Alyssa Thyssen, but Westin McLeod was able to score. The second half of the game had Daniel Sippel in the Sharks' net and Matthew Cardiff in the Wolves' net. He made a great save on Scott Sippel's first kick but his second kick scored the third goal of the game. During Annamieka Kerkhofs turn in the Wolves' net, she did some fancy ball stopping but McLeod's fancy footwork netted him his second goal of the game. Brussels player Andrew McDonald scored seconds into the game on the first of several nifty passing plays initiated throughout the game by Blake Griffiths. Listowel quickly turned the tide, scoring three unanswered goals by the end of the first half, then adding a fourth early in the second. Through hard work and persistence the B2s finally found their scoring touch and came back with three goals to tie the score, one by Steven "Petey" McNichol and two by Greg Bowers. The game stayed tied until with two minutes left the visitors scored the winner on a goal mouth scramble following a corner kick. The final score was Listowel 5, Brussels 4. The previous week (June 9) the B2s had travelled to Newry to meet the Elma I team. Elma scored first, but Brussels came back later in the half to even the score at one each on a goal by Bowers. Ellin carried the edge in play through most of the game with a superior positional game but were repeatedly turned back by strong goaltending of the Brussels keepers Andrew McDonald and Doug Schnocic As well, excellent play by Mitch Blake and Candice McLellan helped to keep the score even until late in the game when Elma scored three times, resulting in a final score of Elma 4, Brussels 1. Walton Mites score 52 runs Walton Mite Boys blew away their opponents in two games last week, outscoring them a total of 52-7. The hometowners welcomed Bel- more to the diamond, June 15, out- smashing them 27-5 Adam McClure belted two homers and a double. One homer= and a single each went to Chris Holmes and Chris Regele. Daryl Hulley smacked a homer and a double while Michael Dietz belted one round-tripper. Kyle McNichol tapped the ball for two doubles and a single. The June 17 matchup against Ethel was equally impressive as Walton brought home a 25-2 win. Homeruns went to Regele and Holmes. Doubles were hit by Regele (two), Hulley and McClure with singles going to Holmes, Hul- ley, McClure, Dietz (two), Derrick Wolfe, Blake Miller and Justin Biesinger. Wolfe also tagged a triple. Brussels U-9 Is battled the undefeated Brussels Ills on Monday night, June 15 at the Brussels Public School and ended the high scoring game in. a 6-6 tie. Spectators were kept on the edge of their seats as there were numerous ._ shots on both nets. -In goal for Brussels I were Chris Stoltz and Chelsey McLellan for the first half and in the second half were Chris Jutzi and Wade Stephenson. Brussels goals were scored by Jordan Campbell, Wade Stephenson and Chris Jutzi. These high spirited teams played hard and ended the game with a handshake. Brussels I gave birthday Dynamites blow away Newton On June 16 the U-7 Brussels Dynamites led by Captain Sean Slater defeated the Newton Tigers 9-1. Goaltenders were Evan Ducharme, Ryan Smith and Brianne Wheeler as well as others. Goals were scored by Taylor Prior, Jonas Schwarz, Joel Wilkinson, Cody Subject, and Ben Cowing.
