400 cyclists pedal for cure to MS
On Aug. 8-9, the Lake Huron
beach town of Grand Bend will act
as the start and finish points for the
eighth running of the Noranda
Forest Multiple Sclerosis Bike
Tour. For the 1998 MS Tour, an
expected 400 cyclists will spin their
wheels to connect with a cure for
multiple sclerosis.
After checking-in and fueling up
with a complimentary breakfast at
6:30 a.m., cyclists will prepare to
depart the Port Blake conservation
area at 8 a.m. In groups of 20,
riders take to this fully paved, well-
marked route through the beautiful
country roads of Huron and
Middlesex Counties. The route has
the comfort of first aid coverage
and support vehicles, and the
conveniences of rest stops at
volunteer homes every 10 - 15 kms.
The tour's midway point is the
University of Western Ontario's
Saugeen Maitland Hall, which
serves as an overnight rest and
relaxation stop. The enthusiastic
riders are greeted with food,
accommodations, and a soothing
massage.
An assortment of entertainment
and activities are at rider's disposal
throughout the afternoon. An
enjoyable dinner, comic
entertainment and an evening dance
are the perfect finish to a great
day's ride.
Well rested and energized with a
hearty breakfast, the cyclists
embark on the second leg of their
journey at 8 a.m., Sunday morning.
The promise of a beach side
barbecue is a great motivator on the
return trip to Grand Bend.
The funds that are raised at the
tour are designated for research
into a cause and cure for multiple
sclerosis. More than 50,000
Canadians are affected by MS; the
most common disease of the central
nervous system.
MS effects women twice as often
as men, and produces problems
with vision, speech, and mobility in
varying degrees. Canada has one of
the highest rates of multiple
sclerosis in the world.
Information brochures with
enclosed registration forms are
available at most area bike shops,
Canada Trust branches, and
assorted retail locations. Interested
individuals are welcome to drop by
the MS Events office at 1100
Dearness Dr., Unit #17, in London.
A registration fee of $50 applies,
and all cyclists are required to raise
the pledge minimum of $250.
All food, accommodations, first
aid, support vehicles, entertainment
and the event t-shirt are
complimentary to those involved.
