In a see-saw, six-inning battle, June 10, the Brussels Pre-Mites were edged by the Ethel I squad, 17-16. Ethel was held to one run in the first, aided by outs at first by Justin Pipe and Dustin Lichty at second. Brussels took advantage of the opportunity, scoring six in their first at-bat. Christopher Becker led off with a double, followed by a single from Lichty and an RBI single by Bren- dan Stretton. With Pipe on by a one bagger, Andrew Lindsay sacrificed in a run. A strong double off the bat of Bradley Quesenberry pushed in two before Meagan Keffer singled and Cole McLean tapped one for an RBI. It was a big win for Belgrave PeeWee Girls when they travelled to Listowel, June 9, but one that started shaky. After being shutout in the visitors half, Belgrave let their opponents get started, allowing two runs, despite some solid catching/third- base play by Kerri Meier and Erin Sanders to nail two outs. The Belgrave Mite Boys were edged by a visiting squad from Bel- more on June 10. After a solid 6-1 first inning lead, the team allowed Belmore to score seven in the second, then shut them down in the home half. In this see-saw battle, the Bel- grave team notched a seven-inning third to come ahead by three, but the numbers reversed in the fourth The Walton Mite Boys have been putting the pressure on the compe- tition early in the season. On June 8 in Ethel, the squad slugged their way to a 21-12 victo- ry. Leading the offense were Der- rick Wolf with two homers and Daryl Hulley with one. Other hot hitters were Adam McClure and A grand slam by Terry Radford led the Mullett Mites offensive in a 26-21 victory over Varna, June 8. Anthony Wilts and Bradley Lapp also blasted homers in this away Marissa Pipe got to first before Christine Bone earned an RBI as the 10th batter. Good defensive plays by Stretton and Lindsay earned outs at third and second to keep Ethel at one. Brussels added to their total in the second, when, with two out, Becker, Lichty and Stretton dou- bled. With singles from Justin Pipe and Lindsay, three runs came home. Ethel narrowed the gap slightly with two runs in the third. The visitors defense picked up in the bottom of the inning, out-racing the hitters to first base for two outs Singles were hit by Keffer, Marissa Pipe and Megan Miners. Alex Raynard had a good hit but was beat to first for an out. Adding four runs in the fourth, Despite Listowel's consistent play, Belgrave enjoyed some solid innings with seven runs in the sec- ond and eight in the fourth. Scoring in the second were Ashley North, Jenni Hopf, Meier, Jenny Skinn, Charlene Bromley, Michelle Nixon and Lisa Black. Sherri Ross, Bromley and Nixon crossed in the third, while Hopf and inning for a final 17-15 victory for the visitors. Game highlight was a third inning grand slam blast by Mark McCracken. Pitching for Belgrave wcre Trev Hopf and Jamie McGlynn. Coach Patti Nixon said, "It was a very close game. The boys played well both offensively and defen- sively." Chris Regcle, who each served up a triple and a single. In two earlier games the team came out ahead as well. A June 3 barn-burner in Wingham ended in a 14-13 win, while the hot bats were swinging at home on June 1 against Gowanstown. The final score in that one was 22-11 for the home- town boys. contest. Pitching duties went to Kody Reid, Meghan Wheeler, Derek Dol- mage and Samantha McVittie, who combined for six strikeouts. Grounded Brussels Pre-Mite Brendan Stretton makes a great stop in the infield as his team took on Ethel I, June 10. Ethel drew the score even at 10. The hometowners were able to notch only two in their at-bat, for a narrow lead. Singles were hit by Becker, Lichty, Justin Pipe (RBI), Lindsay, Quesenberry and Keffer (RBI). Ethel took the lead for the first time in the fifth when thye tallied four and held Brussels scoreless. Becker earned the final out of Ethel's at-bat, at second base. Down 17-12, Brussels needed five runs to tie the match, but were able to score only four with the 10th batter rule. Becker, Lichty, Stretton, Lind- say, Quesenberry, Keffer and McLean all hit singles. RBIs in the final at-bat went to Justin Pipe, Lindsay, Quesenberry and McLean. Black were the only players who didn't cross the plate in the fourth. Ross was the lone runner home in the fifth. The final score in this nail-biter was 18-15 for Belgrave. Coach Mary Sanders was pleased with the girls' work. "The infielders are starting to play tight and respond to the plays. It was a good game." It was a romp for the Blyth Mites ball team when Varna came to town, June II. With Darcey Cook on the mound in the first, Varna was held off the board. Jeff Elliott started the Blyth attack with a double, followed by a homerun from Adam deBoer to earn him two RBIs. A walk to anthony Peters put him on for a two-run homer off the bat of Josh Albrechtas. A walk to Eric Caldwell lead to trouble as he stole second and third. Another walk to Derek Youngblut offered RBI opportunities for Cook when he smashed a triple. Up 7-3 going into the bottom of the second, Blyth struck for eight runs to increase their lead. Nicholas Dale and Justin Ritchie began the inning taking walks, before Elliott singled. The Blyth Atom Its posted a loss, a win and a tie in recent soccer action. On May 26, Lucknow B Kool coasted into town for a well- matched contest. Coaches Dave and Dianne McLellan said that while the host team had lots of spark they just couldn't light the fire to get ahead. Tied 2-2 Luc- know nailed the go-ahead point with just five minutes remaining. Blyth scorers were Duane Buffinga, assisted by Chris Camp- bell and Donnie Williamson, assist- ed by Jacob Rouw and Buffinga. In net were Danny Cullens and Justin Baarda. June 2 saw an 8-1 trouncing of the Goderich Pirates on a very cold night. With the team putting out a great effort, Buffinga was able to notch six goals, while Campbell and Josh DeGans each -nailed one. Assists went to Rebecca Schultz, Cullens, Nathan Schultz, Rouw, DeGans, Williamson and Buffinga. DeGans and Cullens split the time in net. Clinton Electrodes visited June 9 and played to a 3-3 tie. Cullens scored a single and Buffinga notched two in this effort. deBoer cleared the bases with his second home of the game. A triple from Albrechtas, fol- lowed by a single from Caldwell pushed another run in. Cook earned two RBIs when he homered home Youngblut who had reached on a walk. Down 15-3, Varna mounted a comeback in the third, hitting for seven runs off Cook. Blyth would not be held back as they added seven in the third and eight in the fourth for a, decisive 31-10 victory. Singles were tapped by Elliott, Caldwell, Ritchie and Cook. Peters and Albrechtas belted triples, Ben Caldwell hit a double and walks were taken by Blake Hesselwood (two), Dale (two), deBoer, Young- blut, Ben Caldwell and Ritchie. A big hit came in the fourth when Albrechtas knocked a grand slam. Buffinga and Elliott earned the assists while DeGans and Cullens did duty in goal. GRADUATION Jennifer Vanass, daughter of John and Nancy, graduated from Lambton College, Sarnia on June 13th with a diploma in Business Administration - Marketing and also a certificate in Human Services Foundation. Congratulations Jennifer. GRADUATION Irene Hallahan, daughter of Maurice and Mary of R.R. #3 Blyth graduated June 13, 1998 from Lambton College, Sarnia with an Early Childhood Education diploma. Irene graduated on the Deans Honor Roll. She is currently enrolled in their Infant Toddler Care program. Congratulations Irene, we are very proud of you.
