Jardins mark 60th
Another year of Scouting in
Blyth has just about wrapped up. It
has been a year of learning, fun and
new adventures.
Many 1st Blyth Scouting youth
and their families were treated to a
20-minute flight at the Goderich
Airport on May 9, compliments of
several local members of the
Experimental Aircraft Association.
Their Young Eagles Program is
designed to introduce young people
to the experience of flying,
something that many would never
have experienced otherwise.
All Sections attended one of the
best ever Huron District year-end
camps at Benmiller May 22-24.
The great weather complimented an
excellent program of hiking, games
and crafts.
Senior Scouts could participate in
a 25 km hike.
All sections were challenged to
set up their campsite according to
the particular theme; Western' for
Beavers, 'Life in Space' for Cubs,
'CJ Revisited' for Scouts.
Among other activities,
Venturers travelled down the river
on innertubes. All campers enjoyed
the camaraderie, the good food, and
the evening campfires.
On May 26 all sections enjoyed
the family barbecue at the Lions
Park, where the third-year Beavers
moved up to Cubs, the third-year
Cubs moved on to Scouts, and the
third-year Scouts moved up to
Venturers.
Terry Gilbank and Robert
On June 9 at approximately
9:30 a.m., a 19-year-old male from
Hullett Twp. was injured in Clinton
near Bayfield Road.
Brian Wames worked for a local
contractor who was assisting at
removing a boom extension from a
flatbed truck. According to the
OPP, the youth was removing the
chain when the operator of the
tractor moved. flipping over the
boom on to the victim's leg.
He was taken to Clinton Public
Hospital, then transported to
Stratford General Hospital with a
compound fracture to his leg.
The Ministry of Labour has been
notified and have started their
investigation into the incident.
Goodall received their Chief Scour
Award at a ceremony on June 13 at
Norwell District Secondary School
in Palmerston. This is the highest
award that a Scout can earn.
For all sections weekly meetings
have ended until September.
However, during the summer
months some senior youth will be
taking the Basic Canoeing Course
June 26-28.
Also that weekend the Venturers
will be participating in a Canadian
Voyageur Adventure with Venturer
Advisors Mike and Arden Scott.
The Company has worked hard all
year to raise the funds necessary to
pay for this excursion. This five-
day adventure includes three days
of camping in Algonquin Park,
canoeing on Opeongo Lake, and
whitewater rafting down the
Ottawa River.
Second-year Cubs will have the
opportunity Aug. 22-23 to attend
the second annual Cub Canoe
Camp at Attawandaron, where they
will camp, and learn the basics of
handling a canoe.
1st Blyth registration for the
1998-1999 Scouting year will be
Sept. 16 at the arena. Group
Committee is currently recruiting
new leaders for all sections.
Scouting offers a fun,
adventurous, educational and social
program for youth from five years
old and up. The same benefits
apply for adult leaders.

Tom and Ruth Jardin of Blyth
celebrated a milestone on Sunday.
The couple marked their 60th
anniversary with an open house at
Knox United Church, Auburn.
It was a fine day when the former

ried Thomas Jardin; son of Frank
and Harriet of Toronto at Auburn
United Church, May 24,1938. Rev.
Hugh Wilson officiated. The cou-
ple was attended by Annie Straugh-
an and Norman Rodger.
The newlyweds honeymooned in
the Muskoka area.
Throughout their marriage they
resided in East Wawanosh, Clarks-
burg, Wingham, Auburn and Blyth.
Tom was employed as a farmer,
bushworker, carpenter, storekeeper
and with The Investors Group. He
retired in 1978. Homemaker Ruth
is still on the job. She is still active-
ly involved in the church.
The Jardins raised five children
Donald, Lyman, Paul, Bonnie and
Harold.
About 150-200 family and
friends attended the open house,
including three of the Jardins'
great-grandchildren.
