As in all municipalities, Brussels
residents arc going to be waiting to
pay their next tax instalment.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
told councillors at their meeting
Monday, that the provincial gov-
ernment had further delayed the
1998 assessment roll. Originally,
the government had promised to
have them to municipalities by
April 30. On March 27, Finance
Minister Ernie Eves announced the
delivery date was being postponed
to May 29 in order to introduce leg-
islation.
A letter from the Association of
Municipalities of Ontario stated
that the delay is linked to a delay in
the approval of Bill 16, Small Busi-
ness and Charities Protection Act,
1998.
White told council the province
has said that payment for services
delivered by the municipalities
would be delayed until Sept. 4.
Correction
There was an error in the cutline
"Take the Cake", in last week's
issue of The Citizen.
It should have stated, "The per-
son standing on the right spot had
their choice from a number of
cakes, baked by parents and teach-
ers. Pauleen Kerkhof, in back,
helps the lucky winner make her
decision."
We apologize for the error.

Also the Community Reinvestment
Funds arc intended to help any
municipal cashflow problems,
caused by the delay.
"I just don't know at this point,
when I'll get the final taxes out,"
said White, adding that if the
municipality does experience a
problem with cashflow, she could
put in an interim tax bill.
"I think we're safe in leaving it
for another month, because we
don't have to pay any of the bills to
the government for services. That
will help."
She promised to keep council
updated, then added, "But that
notice was very disappointing."
