Huron-Bruce Swingers end season
Thanks
As part of their continued support of Canadian theatre,
Dan Gall, right, program director of CKNX Radio
presented Keith Roulston, president of Blyth Festival's
board of directors, with a cheque for $2,000 last week.
This donation, made annually, assists Canadian writers,
actors and directors in the creation and production of
plays in the past as Barndance Live and There's Nothing
in the Paper.
Stratford is renowned for its
beautiful old homes and on
Sunday, May 31 The Lung
Association, Huron-Perth Counties,
is offering the opportunity for a
close up look at four of the city's
finest. Home and Garden Glimpses,
The Lung Association's first-ever
house tour, takes place from 1 p.m.
- 6 p.m. and includes three
beautiful bed and breakfasts and
one private residence.
Birmingham Manor, at 240
Birmingham St., was built in 1905
in the Queen Anne style. Its first
homeowner was Col. John L.
Youngs, former mayor of Stratford,
who built City Hall. The home
remained in his family for 80 years.
The spacious house has been
extensively renovated but
maintains the original character of
the home. A shell motif is
prominent throughout the home,
featured in wood mouldings, the
fireplace and newel post.
The lovely formal garden attracts
the attention of all who pass this
home at the corner of West Gore ad
Birmingham Street.
Angel's In, located at 208 Church
St., was built in 1889. John
Alexander Davidson, one-time
president of British Mortgage and
Trust, and his family lived in this
home for many years.
This late Victoria home features
original woodwork, stained and
bevelled glass windows, an Art
Nouveau fireplace in 'the dining
room and cherry, oak and maple
parquet floors. The distinctive
verandah was added in 1900.
Built in the mid-1800s of local
brick, Blackwater House at 122
Douglas St. features gothic gables
and interesting brickwork around
the Italian= windows. This house
has been extensively renovated and
the kitchen is a chef's dream. An
attractive swimming pool with
fountain is a focal point of the
lovely lush gardens.
57 James St. is the home of
Kevin Silver and Jane Homan.
Built in the early 1870s by lawyer
John Idington, it is one of the first
homes built from yellow brick in
Stratford. Idington lived in this
Regency cottage until his mansion
at 45 James St. was constructed,
then converted the cottage into the
estate's gatehouse.
The house features many neo-
classical appointments such as the
front door's sidelights and transom.
This house has particular local
interest for it was here in 1952,
while Alf and Dama Bell were
homeowners, that meetings took
The Huron-Bruce Swingers have
had a busy winter! Guests at the
Wearing of the Green Dance in
March were from the Howick
Country Squares. Then on April 18,
dancers from several clubs came to
dance to the singing calls of Charlie
McClure.
When the Swingers visited the
Howick group in April, they were
able to take not only the club
banner but also Egbert Jacob's shirt
in the bargain. (It is reported that
the shirt was returned to Howick
caller Egbert several sizes smaller
and decorated with lace!)
Most recently, the Swingers held
their annual banquet and graduation
ceremony. The St. Helen's Institute
provided a wonderful meal at their
place which led to the
establishment of the Stratford
Shakespearean Festival.
Tickets to Home and Garden
Glimpses are $10 in advance, $12
the day of the tour. Advance tickets
are available from The Lung
Association at the Jenny Trout
Centre, Suite 121, 342 Erie St. or
Village Studios on Ontario Street.
Tickets on the day of the tour are
only available at Birmingham
Manor.
All proceeds from Home and
Garden Glimpses support the
asthma education programs of The
Lung Association. For tickets or
more information, call The Lung
Association at 271-7500.
