T he news from Compiled by Kay Lapp Phone 526-7264 Knox plans country supper Community honours postmistress Hymn sing opened the United Church service Sunday, March 22 with Nancy Park organist and Rev. Paul Ross leading. Announcements were given by Rev. Ross. The Roast Beef Country dinner is April 1. Price is adults $8, primary school children, $4 and younger free. There is also a family rate of $25. Reservations obtainable from Maureen Bean and Teresa Roetcisoendcr. Rev. Ross and Mrs. Ross gave the service and extinguished the candle for the fourth Sunday of Lent. The children were invited to the front during the singing of Jesus Loves the Little Children. The minister's mystery bag produced a loaf of bread. The children gave numerous replies for its use. Then Rev. Ross explained to them the meaning of the "Bread of Life". The Silver Tops met at noon on March 18 for a potluck dinner. Elva and Jack Armstrong and Ethel Ball were in charge. At the end of the meal a special treat was enjoyed, maple syrup which Ernie Durnin had supplied. Lois Haines had made rolls which were perfect with it. After dinner Elva Armstrong gave a St. Patrick's Day joke and Ethel Ball gave very humorous Irish sayings. Lois Haines gave a reading written by Mrs. H. Worsell, a tribute to Auburn, "Down Memory UCW meets On March 16 at 8 p.m. Margaret Bakker welcomed Auburn UCW members and opened with a reading from Matthew on the keys to God's kingdom. This was followed by a reading from Kay Lapp about a young couple with two children. He became a Christian and followed God's instructions. Unfortunately she did not and eventually the marriage failed. However, he was still an excellent father to the children. Mrs. Bakker continued with scripture from Proverbs concerning the good women who think of others. The group divided and contests were played with the first group winning both. Offering was received and prayer of thanks given. Secretary and treasurer reports were given. Thank you letters were read. One was a special thanks from Queen's Bush for a donation. On April 20 at 6:30 p.m. Kathi Urbank-Hindley will be guest speaker at North St. United, Goderich. The theme is "On Eagles Wings". London Conference UCW annual is April 27-28 at Dundas United, Woodstock. The theme is "Spiritually" with speaker Heather McLean. A video from Genesis was shown. Beverages and goodies were served and a social half hour followed. Rev. Ross told about the Huron Safc Home for Youth at Exeter and about Oliver Lodge and Southdalc chaplaincy. These gave assistance to children, Alzheimer cases and the disabled. The United Church Missions has four United Church hospitals in out of the way places in the west. These give assistance where it is badly needed. The congregation is asked to give assistance too through M and S givings. It is badly needed by others. Rev. Ross closed with prayer on the same subject. Collection was received from the Sunday School and the church. Rev. Ross spoke of the good that the church and people of the church are doing and offered three cheers for them. How Firm A Foundation was sung followed by benediction and amen. Lane". The poem involved in an occasion was "And it Rained". Margaret Hildebrand opened the business with a reading 'May God Bless You!' Reports were given. Ell and Kay Lapp and Marion Haggitt will be in charge of the April meeting. There will be the Spring Rally at Holmesville on April 21 at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $4 per person. It was decided to take the day mystery tour on May 27 if possible. Business closed with prayer in unison. Crokinole and scrabble were played. Dorothy Grange and Ell Lapp were prize winners. Elva Armstrong won the scrabble game. Family and friends of Auburn and surrpunding community were at the Auburn Hall on Saturday, March 21 beginning at 8 p.m. This was a retirement party for Jewell Plunkett. She has been a super Auburn Postmistress for a good many years. Everyone wishes Jewell all happiness in her future. The WI will meet at the hall on March 26 at 2 p.m. Laura Mae Chamney and her group are in charge. Silver Tops enjoy taste of spring Longtime service Blyth Fire Area Board and the firefighters hosted a special evening on Friday to honour Tom Cunningham of Hullett Twp. Cunningham served on the board for 21 years, 15 of those as its chair. Fire Chief Paul Josling presented him with a clock made by Leo Sanders of Morris Twp. 4.6
