MARGARET KATHLEEN
GOVIER CALDWELL
A lifelong resident of the area,
Margaret Kathleen Caldwell of
Blyth died in University Hospital,
London, March 18, 1998. She was
in her 83rd year.
Marg was born in Londesboro on
Oct. 7, 1915 to William H. Govier
and Margaret Buchanan.
The family lived in Westfield.
Marg was a member of the
Westfield United Church. She
became a member of Blyth United
Church after she married Earl
Caldwell on April 14, 1937. He
predeceased her Dec. 17, 1988.
She worked as a grocery clerk for
many years, before retiring in
Blyth.
She enjoyed children and
flowers. Her yard attracted many
viewers each year.
Marg leaves behind two sons,
Gerald Govier, and Jack and Erlene
Caldwell, all of Blyth, six
grandchildren, four of whom she
raised, Lorna and Randy Fraser of
Blyth, Nelson and Donna Caldwell
of Goderich, Gail and Ron Ulch,
Dungannon, Trent Caldwell and
Angela Good, Goderich, Jackie
Caldwell and John Albert, Blyth
and Chris Caldwell, Barrie. She
was a loving great-grandmother to
10 great-grandchildren.
Marg was a dear sister to Vi and
Mel Good, Dorothy and John
Lyndon, all of Goderich and Bob
and Lois Govier, Seaforth. She was
sister-in-law to Ralph and Gladys
Caldwell and Dorothy and the late
Laurie Scott, all of Blyth.
She will be missed by several
nieces and nephews.
Marg was predeceased by one
daughter, Faye Caldwell, one
grandson in infancy, John
Caldwell, one great-grandson, Karl
Ulch, one brother and sister-in-law
Mervin and Margaret Govier, one
sister and brother-in-law, Alice and
Charlie Anstay, sister-in-law Ella
Carter.
The funeral service was
Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m. from
the Tasker Chapel, Blyth of
Beattie-Falconer Funeral Homes. A
touching service included a solo, In
the Garden sung by Karen
Bruinsma.
Margaret was carried to her final
resting place in Blyth Union
Cemetery by five nephews, Murray
Govier, Bob Scott, Wayne
Caldwell, Ross Govier, Stephen
Caldwell, and one great-grandson,
Joe Fraser. Carrying floral tributes
were Leslie Caldwell, Don Scott,
Reg Good, Keith Good and Kevin
Gross.
CLARENCE KELLY
Clarence Kelly passed away at
Sunset Haven, Welland, Ontario on
Friday, Feb. 6, 1998.
He is survived by his wife Beth,
his children Stan and his wife Liz
of Halifax, Violet and her husband
George Campbell of Port Elgin,
Julia and her husband Larry
Horowitz of Bradford, Rhoda and
her husband Harry Voogjary of
Timmins, Kristine Kelly of Port
Coquitlan, B.C., five grand-
children, several nieces and
nephew and his sister-in-law, Betty
Kelly of RR 2, Blyth.
He was predeceased by his
parents Julia and John Kelly Sr.,
his sister Anna Mae (Mrs. B. Craig)
and one brother, Jack Kelly.
Mr. Kelly was employed with
Atlas Steels until his retirement in
1979.
Funeral mass was celebrated at
St. Kevin's Church, Welland.
Interment Holy Cross Cemetery,
Welland.
VERA IRENE GIBBINGS
Mrs. Vera Irene (Shobbrook)
Gibbings of Huronview Home for
the Aged, Tuckersmith Twp.,
passed away at her residence, Sun-
day, March 15, 1998. She was 92.
Born in Hallett Twp. on Jan. 6,
1906, Mrs. Gibbings was the
daughter of the late John and Mary
(Webb) Shobbrook. A homemaker,
Mrs. Gibbings was the beloved
wife of Percy, who predeceased her
in 1980. She was a member of the
Ontario Street United Church in
Clinton and a past member of
Ontario Street UCW, Summerhill
Ladies Club and Golden Radars.
Mrs. Gibbings was the dear
mother of Doris Andrews of Lon-
don, Robert and Donna Gibbings of
Clinton and mother-in-law of
Verna Gibbings of Clinton. She
was also loved by 11 grandchildren
and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gibbings was predeceased
by a son, William in 1989, a sister
Maude Radford and two brothers
Bert and Lorne Shobbrook.
Visitation was held on Monday,
March 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at
the Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home.
Rev. Willy Ziegler officiated at
the funeral service, held on Tues-
day, March 17 at 1:30 p.m. The
eulogy was delivered graciously by
granddaughter Arlene Andrews.
Carrying floral tributes were
Katie Hemingway, Ashley Gib-
bings and Lyndsay Andrews.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Gibbings'
grandsons, John Gibbings, Paul
Gibbings, Jamie Gibbings, Wayne
Andrews, Jeffrey Andrews and
Jerome Andrews.
Interment will be at Clinton
Cemetery.
JOHN FRANKLIN BEANE
John Franklin Beane of RR 4,
Clinton died as a result of an
accident on Monday, March 16. He
was 62.
Born in Hensall on March 8,
1936, Mr. Beane was the son of the
late John and Gladys (Hunkin)
Beane.
He was married to the former
Ann Devereaux.
Mr. Beane was an entrepreneur,
farming and logging. He was a
member of Ontario Street United
Church.
Along with his wife Ann, Mr.
Beane is survived by his children,
Carol Ellen and Terry Jamieson of
Beigrave, and Cheryl Jeannette and
David Currie of Blyth.
He is also survived by his
brothers and sisters, Lawrence and
Ruth Beane of Clinton, Beverley
and Fell Beane of Brantford, and
Marilyn Evans of Cambridge.
He was a loving grandfather to
Rae, Darren, Kyle, Shania, Kieth,
Stacey and Chelsea.
Visitation was held at the
Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home in
Clinton on Wednesday, March 18,
from 7 - 9 p.m.
The funeral service was held at
the funeral home on Thursday,
March 19 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev.
Mary Jane Hobden of Beigrave
United Church officiating.
Interment in Baird's Cemetery.

WMS roll
The WMS of Melville Presby-
terian Church met at the home of
Mrs. Cal Kramer for the February
meeting.
The hymn Yield Not to
Temptation was sung. Thelma
Cardiff had the devotions and
prayer. The scripture lesson was
Psalm 37.
President Hilda Elliott conducted
the business. The offering was
taken and dedicated. Secretary and
treasurer's reports were given.
Part two of the study book was
reviewed by the president. It was
"The World Food Bank".
Margaret McLeod read an inter-
esting letter which she had received
from a missionary in Africa.
The roll call was answered by
reading a Bible verse containing
the word "lion" or "lamb".
The meeting closed with prayer.
The hostess and Isobel GibSon
served a delicious lunch and a
social time was enjoyed.
Melville Presbyterian Church
Women's Guild met in the church
parlour on Tuesday, March 17 at
8 p.m. with Joanne King and Mary
Carr preparing devotions. The
parlour was decorated by many
interesting articles from Ireland.
Everyone was welcomed, Mrs.
Carr read, "Who Was Saint
Patrick." An Irish lullaby was sung.
The scripture reading was Ruth
1: 6-22 followed by the singing of
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.
Mrs. King told the history of the
Irish people with their many
hardships. An interesting video on
the eastern provinces with Celtic
music being played in the
background was enjoyed.
After reading a poem "What is it
to be Irish?", Mrs. King closed this
part of the meeting with prayer.
President Carr opened the
business part of the meeting with a
St. Patrick's poem, and thanked
Mrs. King for her interesting and
informative meeting.
The minutes of the February
meeting were read and adopted. A
letter was read requesting the
church provide the noon lunch on
Tuesday, April 7 during Holy Week.
Treasurer Jean Ireland gave the
report.
The roll call was answered by 16
members. Many answered with a
comment about Ireland.
A delicious St. Patrick's lunch
was served.
