The easiest and most effective way to give a small child medicine is by giving them liquid through an oral syringe — it gives a more precise measure, allows better control and avoids spillage. Teaspoons and droppers are less accurate when it comes to measurement and are more difficult to control. To administer medication with the oral syringe, be sure to place it inside the child's cheek, not toward the back of the throat, and release the medicine in slow steady amounts, waiting for the child to swallow. Oral syringes are available from your local pharmacy for $2 - $3. For most children under 8, non- chewable tablets can be difficult to swallow. Instead, crush the pill and give it to the child mixed in a favourite food or if the taste is a problem disguise it in ice cream, yogurt or apple- or chocolate sauce. Not all tablets should be crushed; check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure. With babies, some medication can be mixed in a bottle, but be sure to mix it into an amount small enough that the infant will drink it all. Be calm, be positive and if necessary offer a small reward to help the medicine go down. Some doctors say that cheerful people resist disease better than grumpy ones. Hence the surly bird catches the germ.
