Agriculture '98 Shayrina Sheep Farm opens in May they have, a white-faced sheep which are out of season breeders. The other breed at Shayrina are the more common, black-faced Suf- focks, which lamb in the spring. The Arcotts is a combination of breeds, more a man-made one. "Because it breeds out of season then the meat can be supplied throughout the year, not just at the Easter market." There will always be more to the heart of Shayrina Sheep Farm than business, however. From the past and the memories built on that past, Jacquie Bishop will continue to have a goal separate from the typi- cal one of livestock producers. "I hope to accomplish something that will enrich the lives of some children. I want them to have a chance to experience life on the farm." To get to Shayrina Sheep Farm, go south from County Road 86 on County Road 12. Turn right at the first sideroad at Jamestown. Go west three miles and watch for the signs on the left hand side. The phone number is 519-887- 9379 or e-mail them at bish@wcl.on.ca. Recyclo, Recycle, Recycle, Recycle, And do it over and over again. Little lambs Clockwise from left: Kabrina, Kayla and Keshia Bishop, whose parents Kevin and Jacquie own Shayrina Sheep Farm, north-west of Brussels, enjoy some spoiling privileges while Mom and Dad are busy with chores. CONTINUED FROM A-5 Box Office. Shayrina Sheep Farm will be open from May to October, Satur- day at 2 p.m. for the general public and during the week for group bookings. As a livestock producer Jacquie does struggle somewhat with how to present an accurate picture of modern farming. "People have said they want to visit a sheep farm and I hope that we let them see there is more to sheep farming than sheep." No matter what the commodity there are aspects of the business that no one could appreciate unless they live the life. Sheep, Jacquie admits are fairly low maintenace with the exception of lambing sea- son. "Then you're out in that barn at all hours of the night." When assistance is needed with birthing, Jacquie laughs that it is something Kevin handles better than herself. "But it's amazing what you do when he's at work." Obviously, as livestock produc- ers the primary source of income from Shayrina are the lambs shipped for meat. "This is where the money is made, not from wool," says Jacquie. "Primarily the ethnic demand is so great for lamb meat that Canadians can't supply their own market."
