School bd. gets good news The Avon Maitland District School Board is finally able to announce good news with regards to the financial situation of the amalgamated board. While it appears finances for the former Huron County Board of Education will break even (all items arc not yet finalized), the for- mer Perth board foresees a surplus of $1.6 million. A concerted effort on the part of the former Perth County Board of Education last fall, when there was a possibility of a shortfall for the stub year of January to August, allowed adjustments to be made to mitigate any loss, said Marilyn Marklevitz, superintendent of busi- ness for the AMDSB. Some of the savings were real- ized through the teachers' with- drawal of services last fall (5.2 million), fewer retirements result- ing in lower gratuity payments (more than $.2 million) and lower salary expenses and non replace- ment of staff ($.3 million). The remainder of the savings is attributed to continuing efforts to reduce expenditures, said Markle- vitz. The relatively strong financial position virtually eliminates the need for further cuts beyond the $2.4 million to the capital plan, announced earlier this year, she said. In his new role as Honourary Associate Artist, Franken brings a wealth of experience to the festival. His familiarity with the Blyth stage and its audiences makes Franken particularly well suited to help outline the theatre's strategic planning for a new era. In his position as Associate Artistic Director, Coates is working full-time co-ordinating the auditioning of actors and actively participating in workshopping new plays for future production. His services are made possible through Theatre Ontario's Professional Training Program, funded by the Ontario Arts Council. The Blyth Festival's 24th season opens June 26. Blyth Festival season opens June 26 0% Financing 12 equal payments over one year Members of the Blyth Figure Skating Club competed at the 30th annual Interclub North Figure Skating Competition, in Stratford, Feb. 22. The competition hosts clubs from 14 different areas around this region. Five skaters from the Blyth Figure Skating Club came home with medals. They are: Corine Falconer — Bronze, Jordan Scott — Silver, Charlene Bromley — Bronze, Michelle Cook — 2 Gold, and Jamie Lewis — Gold. From the junior sides, which is Grades 4-5-6, each class sent three students to the gym. Grades 7 and 8 sent three students to the gym. Speeches in the gym were held on Feb. 18. The contestants are as follows: Stacey Homes, Yvonee De Wit, Ben Beirnes, Crystal Daugherty, Lacey McCall, Steven Crawford, Brett Hunt, Nicole Everett. For the seniors it was Joel Hemingway, Nicki Hallman, Jill Speiran, Stacey Bowles, Jessie Van Loo, and Kelsey Clary. For the juniors, first place goes to Brett Hunt, second to Lacey McCall and third to Crystal Daugherty. All of the participants did an excellent job representing the Blyth Figure Skating Club and deserve congratulations for their efforts. The public is invited to come and see these skaters as well as the rest of the members of the club at the upcoming Achievement Night to be held March 6, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. Jill Speiran, and third to Stacey Bowles. The first and second winners will be going to the Legion to say their speech. Joel is unable to go though because the day they are saying them at the Legion, he will be going on an exchange program. So Stacey Bowles is saying her speech at the Legion then. Congratulations to all who made it and thank you to those who participated, you all did great! FRANCE Five people from our school are participating in an exchange program to France, along with students from other schools they all will be travelling to France. Those five students from the school are: Joel Hemingway, Heather Armstrong, Nicki Hallman, Angie Stratton and Cheryl Armstrong. They leave for France on March 11.
