Drugs, booze land several people in court
POSSESSION
An F. E. Madill student was
fined $200 for marijuana posses-
sion and $300 for breaching proba-
tion when he appeared in
Wingham's provincial court Feb.
19.
Marty Keller, 19, of Wingham
was charged Nov. 19 after police
conducted a search at the school
and found two plastic bags of mari-
juana in Keller's possession. Crown
Attorney Bob Morris said Keller
was on a probation order from
youth court in Stratford on Aug. 23
at the time of the arrest.
Keller pled guilty to both
charges.
IMPAIRED DRIVERS
A Wingham man is spending
some time in jail after pleading
guilty to charges of impaired driv-
ing and refusing to provide a breath
sample.
Matthew Nairn was charged July
13 in Wingham.
His record showed a conviction
from Nov. 15, 1995 for over 80.
The 23-year-old was given 14
days for impaired, seven days con-
secutive for refusing to provide a
breath sample and nine days con-
secutive for failing to stop for
police.
His license was suspended for
two years.
Gregor Peebles, 31, Goderich,
pled guilty, to a charge laid Aug.
29 in Turnberry Twp. Police had
been notified of an accident and
when they arrived at the scene Pee-
bles identified himself as the driver
and said he had swerved to miss a
raccoon.
Breathalizer readings were 180
mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
In 1992 he received 60 days for
drunk driving and 30 days for driv-
ing while disqualified.
Judge Garry Hunter gave Pee-
bles
a
a 21 day term in addition to
the mandatory 12 months driving
prohibition.
A charge of impaired driving cost
a Wingham man his license and
$750.
David Machan, was charged Dec.
14 after police observed him spin-
ning tires on a road in Turnberry
Twp. He made one complete revo-
lution before ending up in the ditch.
Police found a beer bottle on the
passenger side of the car and Mor-
ris said, the driver showed signs of
impairment.
Machan pled guilty to the charge.
Jake Edgar, of Wingham pled
guilty to a charge of over 80.
On Nov. 2, Morris, said, police
attempted to stop Edgar, 19, after
seeing him spinning tires, but he
kept going two blocks to his resi-
dence.
Breathalizer readings were 110
mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
Edgar was fined $750 in addition
to the 12 months driving prohibi-
tion.
Ken Smith of RR1, Listowel was
sent to jail for a total of 60 days
after pleading guilty to a charge of
impaired driving and a charge of
driving while disqualified.
On Oct. 4 in Ethel a police offi-
cer after seeing a car swerving in
front of him activitate the lights on
the cruiser. The car then swerved
towards the shoulder Morris said
and the officer saw things being
thrown from the window.
The driver eventually pulled over
and was arrested. It was discovered
that his license was under suspen-
sion for default payment of a fine.
A record also showed charges of
obstruction and drinking related
charges.
Breathalizer readings from this
arrest were 130 mg of alcohol in
100 ml of blood.
The 33-year-old was sentenced to
45 days for impaired and 15 days
consecutive for driving while sus-
pended. He is also prohibited from
driving for three years.
BREACH PROBATION
Drinking while on probation
landed a Baysville man, currently
serving time on another matter, in
jail for 15 more days.
On Aug. 2 police were called to a
wedding reception in Howick Twp.
During their investigation they
were told that Shawn Taylor, who
was on probation, had been drink-
ing that afternoon and evening.
Taylor had pled guilty to the
charge.
2 hurt
in
accident
On Saturday, Feb. 28 at approx.
11 p.m. on Belfast Road (Ashfield
Twp. Conc. 10/11), near Lanesville
Line (Ashfield Twp. Road 3/4 East
Division) a 1986 GMC pickup
truck driven by Candace
VanDamme (18 years) of 175
Huron Street, Goderich, left the
roadway, entered the south ditch,
struck a laneway and rolled over.
VanDamme and passenger Aaron
Hackett, 21, of 20 Valerie Court,
Goderich were both take to
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital, Goderich.
VanDamme was transferred to
Victoria Hospital, London with
serious injuries.
Police said alcohol was a factor
in this collision.
The investigation is continuing.

POSSESSION OF STOLEN
GOODS
A former Blyth man, now of
Lucknow pled guilty to possession
of stolen property.
Morris said that Terry Harcourt
was arrested Sept. 12 in Wingham
after police recovered items taken
from the Wingham Inn.
THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Sometime between 10 and
12 p.m. on Feb. 21 thieves broke
into a vehicle sitting at Tops Bar in
Vanastra. They removed two
briefcases from the back of a
station wagon plus a large tool case
with a variety of tools to repair
office equipment, screwdrivers,
pliers, multimeter, and other
assorted tools.
BREAK AND ENTER
Culprits broke into R.S.D. Sports
Den on Main Street in Exeter on
Feb. 15. Once inside the crooks
stole a quantity of clothing
including jackets, gym bags, and
Harcourt had not been involved
in the break and enter and had
received only a few bottles of
stolen liquor, Morris said.
Judge Hunter suspended sentenc-
ing and placed Harcourt on proba-
tion for 12 months. He was ordered
to complete 75 hours community
service work at the rate of six hours
per month.

TOOLS STOLEN
A quantity of tools were stolen
from a residence on Albert Street in
Hensall on Feb. 22. Culprits had
entered the garage of the residence
and stolen a 3/4 inch electric drill, 4
1/2 inch Dewalt grinder,
Miteoyoyo dial indicator with
stand, orange propane tank, and
Snap-On impact drivers in a red
case.
