The Blyth Old Stars and Bulldogs Minor Hockey coaches went face-to-face in a benefit
hockey game on Saturday night in Blyth. The event was one of the activities planned to help
the Midget Bulldogs get to Montreal's Canadian Cup tournament in April. While the Old
Stars showed they could still shine from time to time, the coaches proved who was really in
control stealing away the victory.
Midget Bulldogs receive awards
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
hosted game two of their OMHA
semi-final playoff series on March
1 against the Walpole Island
Hawks. Four powerplay goals by
the Bulldogs paved the way to an
eventual 8-5 victory over a gritty,
but short-staffed Walpole Island
squad.
Mike Courtney and Cory Bragg
set up Blyth's opening goal two
minutes into the game as Jeff
Cowan found the mark. Another
powerplay goal three minutes later
gave Blyth a 2-0 lead as Mike
Ansley set up defence mate, Darryl
Postma's blast.
The Bulldogs were enjoying a
two-man powerplay with five
minutes left in the first when Darryl
Bromley cashed in the rebound of
Mike Haggitt's shot. Walpole
Island scored late in the first and
made an effort to play hockey the
rest of the way as their penalty
parade slowed to a trickle.
Walpole Island outscored Blyth
2-1 in the second period, but the
Bulldogs held a 4-3 lead after two
frames thanks to Ansley's
unassisted powerplay drive from
the point.
Tne key to the win was the three
screened shots that found the back
of the net in the first four minutes
of the third stanza. Jamie Black
unassisted, Cowan from Courtney,
then Black again from Haggitt gave
the Bulldogs a 7-3 cushion and
control of the contest.
Walpole Island crept to 7-5 with
two late goals but Haggitt, from
Black and Kyle Anderson, iced the
win with one minute remaining on
a shifty breakaway deke.
This 8-5 win gives the Bulldogs a
2-0 series lead with game three in
Walpole Island this Friday, March
6 at 7 p.m. Game four, if necessary,
is scheduled for Blyth on Sunday,
March 8 at 3:30 p.m.
Blyth needs one win to send
them into the OMHA finals. But it
doesn't get any easier as Walpole
proved they are a force to be
reckoned with if they decide to play
hockey and stay out of the penalty
box.

The Blyth Midget Bulldogs were
the big winners on Saturday night
as they hosted their 'Bonjour

Memorabilia Auction and Sale at
the Blyth Community Centre.
Before the benefit game began
Hugh Hodges, a lifetime member
of the WOAA, presented Bulldogs,
captain Mike Ansley with the
WOAA Midget 'E' championship
trophy and then individually
presented championship medallions
to all team members. And then the
fun began.
The benefit game featured the
Blyth Old Stars against the
Bulldogs minor hockey coaches in
what could best be described as a
game of experience versus even
more experience. When the final
oxygen bottle had been emptied it
was the coaches who shaded the
Old Stars 4-2. Only Tony
MacDonald and Steve Plunkett
could slip the puck past Pat 'The
Dominator' Cronin in the Bulldogs'
net.
Jeff Nesbitt, Barney Stewart, Jeff
Van Peters and Mike 'Radar'
Radford tallied for the coaches as
they secured bragging rights with a
late game comeback.

Howick tied the game at three
before the end of the period.
Blyth scored two unanswered
netters in the third when Hessel-
wood bulged the twine at 12:34 and
Austin added one at 4:18. Assists
went to Bean and Anderson.
In the first game of the second
round of playoffs, Blyth welcomed
Brussels to town.
With two goals in the first Blyth
captured a lead they never relin-
quished.
Austin scored at 4:48, quickly
followed by Tyler Kernighan at
4:02.
Though Brussels finally got on
the board in the third, the effort fell
short.
A natural hattrick by Kernighan
put Blyth up 4-2 for the win.
Assists went to Bean, Ryan
McClinchey and Kendall Whitfield
(two).

the real excitement that followed.
Ice time for the game was donated
by several members of the Blyth
and District Community Centre
Board. Many door prizes were
given away which were generously
donated by the Kitchener Rangers,
Hockey Digest, Bauer, Kitchener
Hockey Sticks, `:'sear Talent and
the Londesboro aced Plant.
Frank Wilson won the 50/50
draw and immediately turned his
$80.50 winnings back to the
Midgets. Some serious coin
changed hands during the
Memorabilia Auction as Burt Lobb
highlighted the fundraising efforts
with a lively and sometimes
physical bidding war.
Over $2,300 was raised in the
auction as several people went
home happy, but none more so than
the Midget players.
David Kennedy donated 25
