Grey says HU or CA should do plumbing inspections By Janice Becker Citizen staff There is a general consensus among municipalities that they do not want to be responsible for plumbing and septic inspections. That was the impression given by Grey Twp. Reeve Robin Dunbar as he told his council, at the March 2 session, of a meeting held in Clin- ton last week to discuss the matter. The meeting, which, Dunbar said, was very well attended, fea- tured presentations from the county and several surrounding conserva- tion authorities. The county currently has people trained to do plumbing and septic Letters THE EDITOR, The Village of Lucknow, known as the Sepoy Town in Ontario, will celebrate its 140th birthday this year with a reunion July 2 to 5. A wide variety of events are planned to make it a fun-filled time for former and present residents and new friends. The opening ceremonies will kick off the big birthday bash on July 2 which will include Miss Lucknow being crowned, former Miss Lucknows, a talent show and the judging of the Donald Dinnie look-a-like contest. Who's Donald Dinnie? Well, he's the bloke who was one of the headliners brought in by the Caledonian Society for the Scottish Games that were staged in Lucknow for 20 years back in the late 1800s. Dinnie was the champion athlete of Scotland and to this day his likeness continues to be associated in some manner or other with Lucknow. There will be events for the young and not so young, including dances, a pig roast, classic car show, seniors tea and card party, a family ball tournament, and church services, plus much, much more. You're all invited home! For more information write to Box 534, Lucknow, NOG 2H0. Yours very truly, Lynn Johnston and Paul Zinn, Chairpersons, Make it Great in '98. THE EDITOR, I am an author commissioned to write an anthology of paranormal events which have been experienced in Ontario over the years. If you have ever seen a ghost or if, perhaps, you live in a house that's haunted by an invisible presence then I'd love to hear from you. But let's not stop there; if you have ever seen a UFO or perhaps heard the howl of a Sasquatch or ever encountered an angel, then I'm just as interested in getting your story for my book. If you wish to remain anonymous I can arrange for that but either way I'd very much like to hear from you. You can write to me at Box 68099, 162 Bonnie Doon Mall, Edmonton, Alberta, T6C 4N6, fax me at 1-403-465-5280 or e-mail me at ghost@planeteon.net. Whatever method you choose I look forward to reading your supernatural, Ontario tale. Thanks a lot. Barbara Smith inspections and the conservation authorities feel they have the exper- tise, through their handling of envi- ronmental issues, to take on the duty, he said. The conservation authorities are also looking for ways to earn income with the reductions in gov- ernment financing. Councillor Lyle Martin believed the "Maitland Valley Conservation Authority seemed not as keen or comfortable" to undertake the inspections, while the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority was more aggressive regarding the matter. Councillor Graeme MacDonald questioned training township build- ing inspectors when the county already has trained people. It would support selling the Stratford buildings if we put junior kindergarten in the Perth schools," Trustee Anderson added. Chairperson Abby Armstrong said trustees must soon make a decision on board location. Principals must know now how many students they will have so they can plan for September. The item is on the agenda of the board's March 10 meeting in Stratford. Trustee Leslie Wood, co- Continued from page 2 budget it would be the roof system. However, Seili warned that continued repairing of old equipment is just throwing money away. "It is just like the condenser. You keep putting money in and you have to replace it anyway." Wilson said he would like to discuss it with the other councils. While Grey had submitted their agreed they did not want to get involved in the process. Clerk-Treasurer Brad Knight also wondered about building inspec- tors' ability to maintain their exper- tise when they might do only three or four inspections per year. Though giving the job to another agency seemed a popular choice, Dunbar said all municipalities would have to agree on who would do the inspections. It would not be cost efficient for the county to do some and conser- vation authorities to do others, he said, adding, there must also be the same rules for all, he said. In discussing building inspec- tions and permits, Dunbar said a system should be developed so it is "one-stop shopping" for contractors where they can pick up and drop off all required forms at municipal offices. chairperson of the headquarters site review work group, said the board has to decide if it wants one headquarters or satellite offices across the district. According to the work group's report, satellite offices could be set up at Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton, Seaforth District High School, Stratford North- western Secondary School and Stratford Central Secondary School. Single locations could be at Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton, the former Perth board's offices in Stratford, or Seaforth District Secondary School. recommendations for the budget, Morris had not had its meeting to discuss it. Seili made a recommendation that a meeting be set with full councils, which would include rec board chair Alvin McLellan; Grey's deputy-reeve, so they could "look at this together."
