The Blyth Swinging Seniors met
in the Memorial Hall for their
potluck dinner on Feb. 25. They
had as their guests the Silver Tops
from Auburn.
Following the dinner President
Lawrence Plaetzer called the
meeting to order. It opened by all
singing 0 Canada with Phyllis
Boak at the piano. A lively sing-
song followed led by Hary
McDowell and Vera Badley.
Elsie Walsh, Lawrence Plaetzer,
Lois Haines and Vera Hesselwood
all had February birthdays. There
were no February anniversaries.
John Hesselwood delighted the
audierice with some good jokes and
gave them their laugh for the day.
Mary Walden introduced the
speaker, David Sparling from Blyth
who has travelled quite extensively.
He showed pictures and told about
his trip to Eastern Europe. He spent
two and a half weeks with his tour,
which was mostly young people
from about 18 to 35 years of age.
They chose to go to many ex-
communist countries and 'see first-
hand how war and communism had
affected these places.
He found the standard of living
much lower than here. The average
annual wage was about $21,000.
He visited Germany and took a
cruise down the River Rhine. It is a
busy route with a lot of barge
traffic. It was quite beautiful with
quite a flourishing wine industry.
He also visited Frankfurt. It was
very modern and there has been a
lot of building since the war.
He visited Prague, capital of
Czechoslovakia which is noted for
its beautiful crystal and lovely
churches. Also he visited Hungary
and described the city of Budapest
which is really two cities separated
by the Danube River.
Then on to Poland where he
visited the city of Krackow, once
home of the present Pope. Also
located in Poland is the city of
Auschwitz where the Nazi
concentration camp was located.
This is notorious as an
exterminating centre where 1 to 3
million people died.
He found most of these places
quite poor and it will take some
time to catch up with Canada.
His pictures and comments were
much enjoyed by all the seniors and
President Lawrence thanked him
very much.
Also Margaret Hildebrand from
Auburn thanked the Blyth Seniors
for their invitation and interesting
afternoon.
A short business period followed
with the usual reports. An
invitation to the St. Patrick's
luncheon at Huronlea on March 17
was extended and a thank you card
was read from Dorothy Dair.
The meeting was then adjourned
by the president.
The next meeting will be March
25. All seniors are welcome.
