PAGE Century minus 10 It was a gala celebration for Violet Howes of Huronlea, Brussels, when she marked her 90th birthday. V. Howes turns 90 There was a full house at Huron- lea in Brussels, Saturday afternoon as family and friends gathered to celebrate Violet Howes' 90th birth- day. Mrs. Howes was born in West Zorra Twp. Oxford County, on Feb. 17, 1908, to John and Mary Hold- en. After attending Bennington School, Woodstock Collegiate and London Normal School, she wed Donald Francis Howes on Dec. 28, 1932. While raising her three children, Mrs. Howes taught elementary school for many years. She is also the proud grandmoth- er of six and great-grandmother of two. Though she retired from teaching in 1972, she continued to stay To remember neighbours around the world, the Women's Inter- Church Council of Canada is spon- soring a World Day of Prayer, March 6, in which the parishes of Blyth United Church and St. John's Anglican, Brussels, will participate. While Canadians think them- selves comfortable with a good income, nice home, healthy chil- dren who attend school every day and weekly visits with grandpar- ents, it is consideration for the less fortunate neighbour which is the focus of the World Day of Prayer. Information from the United Nations Human Development Index for 1997 tells of a common situation in less developed coun- tries such as Madagascar, off the coast of Africa. The husband may earn $700 per year and the wife, with little educa- tion, is unable to find work outside the home. Their third child died before the age of five and the children never knew their grandparents because they died in their 50s. These study results are not sur- active in community projects, par- ticularly those involving children. She helped with the Meals on Wheels program at Clinton Hospi- tal when it first began and says she enjoyed working with the Golden Radar Senior Citizens in Clinton. She is a past president of the Atwood Maple Leaf Institute, past Worthy Matron of the Listowel Eastern Star and past president of the Friendship Circle of Blyth Unit- ed Church. She also served as treasurer for the WMS for many years and was a leader of the Children's Mission Band, in Blyth, for six years. In celebrating her special day, Mrs. Howes welcomed more than 100 guests to Huronlea and received greetings from Prime Min- ister Jean Chrdtien and Governor General Romeo LeBlanc. prising as Madagascar finished 152 of 175 countries in the UN's devel- opment report. Canada placed first. Ways of helping less fortunate people will be the central question for the World Day of Prayer. Everyone is invited to take part in this global, ecumenical move- ment of "informed prayer and prayerful action", which draws par- ticipation from 170 countries. All offerings gathered during the services will support development and justice projects in Canada and abroad. International projects will include nutrition and tutoring pro- grams, homes for the homelessn aged women and migrant workers and computer learning laboratories. World Day of Prayer sponsor Women's Inter-Church Council also works for children's rights, the rights of landmine victims and the abolition of sweatshops. The Blyth United service begins at 7:30 p.m. while St. John's Angli- can starts at 8 p.m. Anyone wishing more informa- tion may check out the web site at www.wicc.org.
