THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1998. PAGE 23. E ntertainment Wingfield' director returns to Grand Douglas Beattie, well-known to audiences in London and through- out the country as director of the very popular and successful Wingfield plays, announced Feb. 4 the second year of Stagecraft 98. This innovative project is a four- week "workshop" for theatre professionals, culminating in five public performances of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts at the Grand Theatre, downstairs in the McManus Theatre, on Feb. 25-28, 1998. Beattie said, "For years we've entertained London area audiences with delightful, original comedies like the Wingfield plays and The Perils of Persephone - and we hope to bring you more of these in the future! But now it's time for something different - plays we wouldn't otherwise get a chance to do." Ghosts is Ibsen's controversial 1881 drama about a woman haunted by the consequences of staying within a disastrous marriage against her better judgement, and is one of modern theatre's most influential plays. Fresh from a triumphant 1997 season at the Stratford Festival in which she played the nurse in Romeo and Juliet, Queen Elizabeth in Richard 111 and Jocasta in Oedipus Rex, Diane D'Aquila will play Mrs. Alving. Former Grand Theatre artistic director, and a long-time favourite of Stratford audiences, Bernard Hopkins will play Engstrand, the carpenter. Krista Jackson, who was last 'seen by London audiences flying Sep. bd. news Staffing adjustments were approved at the Jan. 26 meeting of the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board. Full or partial leaves of absence without pay were granted to Car- olyn Wilson, Feb. 3 to June 26; Nancy Pettigrew, Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 1999 and Francine Looby, Sept. 1, to Aug. 31, 2000. Liz Yundt was enrolled in the deferred salary leave plan and Agnes Gaffney's resignation was accepted, effective June 30. Senior administration was autho- rized to hire an educational assis- tant and probationary teacher. A request will also be sent to the minister asking that support for French as a Second Language pro- grams be maintained at the current level. A special education advisory committee, consisting of Neil Mur- ray, Janet Culliton, Carolyn Carter and Cathy Hubbard was appointed. Bernard Murray, trustee for Usbome, Perth South, West Perth and St. Marys, will also serve on the committee. The board voiced strong opposi- tion to a resolution from the Halton Board of Education, requesting an education referendum be held dur- ing the next election. Voters would be asked their opinion on a dual education system versus one sys- tem. The sale of four acres to the Clin- ton and District Christian School was confirmed. high in the arms of Stephen Russell as Min in Michael Shamata's production of Dracula, will be Regina. Russell, a veteran of 16 Stratford seasons, last seen in London as the above mentioned Count and before that as Kinlcley in the Grand Theatre's The Perils of Persephone (directed by Douglas Beattie), will play Pastor Manders. And former Londoner Eric Woolfe, who has played many roles on the Grand's main stage over the years, notably Eugene in all three plays of Neil Simon's Bright Beach Trilogy, is going to be Oswald. John Thompson, who has designed more productions for the McManus Theatre than any other designer, as well as a number of productions for the main stage, including this season's Sleuth, designs set, costumes and lighting. Beattie, producer and director of all four of the widely acclaimed Wingfield plays, written by Dan Needles and which star his brother, Rod Beattie, will direct. Corrine Richards and Jennifer O'Connor are stage managers, and Jennefer Gerber is assistant stage manager and production assistant. Stagecraft 98 is the second in a series of workshops which will take place once a year for a few weeks, and the project will have a limited, roughly four-year lifespan. Its focus is on the actors' and the director's work, and is designed to Garibaldi's Garden at the Bell Atrium , 100 Dundas Street will be the lovely setting for a Baroque Brunch, presented by Orchestra London, Feb. 15. The 12:15 p.m. lunch will be fol- lowed by the concert at 1:15. Featuring works by Handel Rebel and Geminiami, guests will taste a spattering of European culture of the baroque period. Popular with the ladies and lords, consorts and kings of Italy, France and England in the early 1700s, patrons can sit back and relax to the dance music of that era. Tickets are $19 for adults, (brunch extra), seniors and stu- dents, $17, and youth 18 and under get half off the regular price. Spencer Phillips and David Howard join Orchestra London with their bassoons, at Centennial Hall, Feb. 18 for Musically Speak- ing. The performance will range from the powerful Don Giovanni by provide an opportunity for director, actors, designers and technicians to work on plays they would otherwise not get to do, casting actors experienced in classic theatre along with actors who otherwise would not be getting that experience. It is also an opportunity for these theatre professionals to work in a supportive environment where box office considerations are not paramount. In selecting the play for Stagecraft 98, Douglas Beattie reviewed contemporary and older plays, both comedies and dramas. He looked for plays that are skillfully written and stageworthy, and that have good parts for actors; plays that tell stories and are full of actable scenes; plays that have the capacity to engage, delight, repel, terrify or amuse an audience. Some of the plays considered will undoubtedly be done in other Stagecrafts in years to come. The play chosen for Stagecraft 98 admirably suits both the artistic agenda and the modest budget for this second event. The Stagecraft 98 performances of Ghosts, in the McManus Studio Theatre, downstairs at the Grand Theatre, are: Wednesday, Feb. 25, Preview, 8 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 26, 8 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 27, 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 28, 2 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m. Mozart to the wistful and charming Czech Suite of Dvorak. An added touch to the concert is the informal and illuminating com- mentary from the podium about the composers and their works. Tickets are $15 to $30.
