Bad timing
- As a Kincardine Bulldog slaps one toward the home goal, a downed Brussels Bull loses his
footing. In this best of seven playoff game Sunday afternoon, the hosting Bulls couldn't pull
out a much needed victory, allowing the Bulldogs to take a two game series lead.

Friday night the Bulls travelled to
Kincardine to begin their best of
seven series with the first place
Bulldogs.
With only a couple of good
scoring chances the Bulldogs
jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the
first period. Kincardine increased
the lead to 4-0 after two periods,
then added three more goals to
make the final score 7-0 giving
Kincardine a 1-0 lead in the series.
Sunday afternoon the Bulls had
the Bulldogs back in Brussels for
game number two.
Friday night Brussels Novice
Rep team met up with Wingham in
an exhibition game. Both teams
were playing with less than their
normal number of teammates, but it
proved to be a well matched
competitive game.
No goals were scored in the first
period. Wingham took the lead in

Derek Youngblut got the home
team on the board, assisted by

Then Peters notched one of his

second. Lee Watkins earned the
assist on this marker. Just five
minutes later Tony Bean widened
the gap. Then with just three and a
half minutes left in the second
Johnathon McDowell set up Bean

That was the end of the scoring
in this 4-0 effort.
Kincardine opened the scoring at

seconds remaining to.take a 2-0
lead into the first intermission.
Gary Staples scored at 18:44 of

Playoff season has arrived in
Blyth but the Midget Bulldogs are
on the outside looking in. Most
teams are now involved in playoffs
except the Midgets, who are
waiting for an opponent.
Blyth has the only 'E' division
midget team in the Western Ontario
Athletic Association (WOAA).
They have thus claimed the WOAA
midget 'E' championship without
having played a single playoff
game, and now must wait until the
first of March to see who their foe
will be in the Ontario Minor
Hockey Association (OMHA)
semi-finals.
Until then they will be playing
exhibition games against local
teams who, like Blyth, are waiting
for a playoff opponent or have
recently been eliminated from
playoff contention.
On Jan. 29 the Midget Bulldogs
hit the road for an exhibition game
against Lucknow, who recently
returned from Forest where they
went undefeated in winning the
International Silver Stick
championship. A short-staffed
Bulldogs team put up a valiant
effort until tiring late in the game,
losing 7 - 2.
Blyth opened the game scoring
with six minutes left in the first
frame as Mike Courtney and Mike
Haggitt set up Mike Ansley's
powerplay blast. Lucknow took a
2-1 lead before the opening period
ended but the Bulldogs rebounded
to knot the game 2-2 one minute
into the second stanza.
Blyth was enjoying another
powerplay when Darrell Gen-its set
up Ansley's point shot. Although
the Lucknow cage keeper made the
initial stop, Haggitt pounced on the
loose puck and put a backhand shot
over the goalie and into the twine.
Lucknow again took the lead
before the period ended and iced
the win with four late third-period
tallies, winning 7-2.
The Midgets will also be
spending the month finalizing plans
for their season-ending tournament
in Montreal. The team is entered in
the Canadian Cup tournament in
Montreal from April 2 - 5. They are
organizing several fundraisers to
help offset the player's expenses to
this tournament, thus insuring that
all team members will be able to
participate in what should be a
memorable experience.
The team is hosting a Valentine's
Pancake Breakfast on Feb. 15 at the
Blyth Memorial Hall, with
breakfast being served from 9 a.m.
until 1 p.m. A full smorgasbord of
pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage,
homefries, toast, juice and coffee
will be available at a cost of $4.50
for adults, $2.50 for children with
preschoolers free.
A benefit hockey game and
Sports Memorabilia sale and
auction will also be held with
autographed hockey memorabilia
arriving daily. Plans should be
finalized this week and fundraising
organizers are confident that the
community will embrace their
efforts again, much as they did in
1995.
