The Citizen, 1999-12-15, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1999. A Note from Betty We’re into the home stretch now - 10 days - the excitement is building as we each anticipate Christmas. The feelings of the season - peace, joy, hope and love come to each of us in different ways - carolling, worship, family dinner, Christmas Eve with friends, choosing that special gift, decorating your home and re-living memories, all say Christmas. The Town and Country Homemakers had 64 friends at last Thursday’s Dining Out at the United Church. Birthdays were celebrated, prizes won and a great meal by Susan Armstrong was devoured. The Flynns and Storeys brought their musical gifts to complete the Christmas party. The first 2000 gathering will be the second Thursday of January. The Ministerial of Brussels and Walton hosted an evening of music and readings to celebrate the Christmas season on Sunday at the Mennonite Church. All the choirs offered their Christmas music to an appreciative audience. Nothing like a crowd of good singers to give your spirit a lift. Don’t forget the school concert tonight (Wednesday) and get your carolling voice going Dec. 22 at the United Church. Do some Christmas reading. Bye now, Betty G. Told by Morris council several months ago that Brussels garbage would no longer be accepted at the landfill site after the current area closes, councillors presented sever al questions to Morris at a meeting last month. Responses were received for the regular meeting. That the estimated cost of closure for the current and previous area, was $327,000 of which Brussels would be responsible for 50 per cent caused some concern. Coun cillor Joe Seili said that it didn't seem right for Brussels to pay 50 per cent of this amount when they aren’t represented on the landfill committee. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said that while the agreement had been made some time ago, there would need to be a meeting before this work was done. “I think we need to get a better price.” Councillor Greg Wilson noted that that was likely. “It will go for tender. This is just an estimate.” Another question was the antici pated date of closure, which is June. Also, though Brussels is looking into an arrangement with Grey and McKillop for use of their landfill, the question remained could a new arrangement for waste disposal be done if this didn’t work out. Morris answered affirmatively on the condition that it was for the Ward of Brussels only. White explained that as the village is in Jane Devries would like to wish all her friends and neighbours of James St. and area a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year. Come and see me at Huronlea Apt. 117 Always Welcom talks with four other municipalities regarding amalgamation, Morris would want to be certain they would not be forced to take anyone else’s waste in the future. Morris also stated that as long as Brussels is using the current area the current agreement would be in effect. They also said they would allow an extension to December 2000 as long as the current site had . the capacity for disposal. This was in response to concerns that an arrangement with the Grey/McKil- lop committee could not be made in time. White stressed that in January the issue was something council would have to get working on. “If the landfill is full in June that only gives us six months.” Council agreed to meet with Grey and McKillop. They also want to see what the terms of a new arrangement with Morris would be. “That way you know if you can afford it or not,” said White.
